Year 2 Maths – 2017b Term 3 2024 – Week 1 Notes What is your place in your family? Are you the eldest or the youngest, or the middle child? To understand place value in Mathematics better, let’s explore someone’s place in a large family. For instance, Sophia is the eldest of 6 children, but she is also the shortest and thinnest. The second child is John who is in green, the third child is Jenny who is in the orange shirt. Mary is 4th and Jack is 5th in the family. But Ian, the one in the orange shirt is the youngest of 6 children but he is also the biggest and tallest!
Does the size and the height of the children affect their place in the family? Can we say that Ian is the eldest in the family just because he is the biggest and the tallest? NO. He is in the 6th place or last place in this family of 6 children. He cannot jump the queue just because of his size. And can we say that Mary who is the second largest in height and size is the second eldest in the family? No, she is in the 4th place in the family. Similarly, the position and order in which a digit appears in a number (13,548 for instance) is more important because of its place value, which will almost always determine the value of the number . Place value is the position of the digit in a number. A place value chart will help you understand the importance of position in a number. Let’s start with the Ones place and build it up: To simplify things, there are: • 8 ones or units • 4 groups of 10 • 5 groups of 100 • 3 groups of 1,000 • 1 group of 10,000
We read a number from Left to Right, beginning in this case in the ten thousand place. We use place value headings like 10, 100, 1000. These help us do sums and see which numbers are bigger than others. The longer the number, the greater its value. For example, 15900 is bigger than 9999. A number is made of one or more digits. The number 6379, for example, is made of the digits 6, 3, 7 and 9. 6 thousands, 3 hundreds, 7 tens and 9 ones. You could watch this video at home learn more about the importance of positions of digits in a given number: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28doFUBnvOw Week 17 Homework sheet Pg 4 Q4 : Write the number for a) 1 one + 1 ten + 2 hundreds = ........................ b) 3 tens + 3 hundreds = ........................ c) 9 tens + 9 hundreds + 3 ones = ........................ Understanding the place value of digits in numbers helps in writing numbers in their expanded form. For instance, the expanded form of the number 13548 is 10,000 + 3,000 + 500 + 40 + 8. Now write the expanded form of the number 8407 starting first with the thousand place ________________________________________________________________
Then work out the place value that is missing from the questions below. Week 17 Homework sheet Pg 4, No 5 a) What do you need to do to expand 8879? _______ + _____ + ____ + __. b) 646,698 in its expanded form is six hundred thousand, forty thousand, six thousand, six hundred, ninety and eight. The rest is easy. Optional: Try something challenging Write these numbers from their expanded form: 20,000 + 8000 + 200 + 4 = ____________________ 80,000 + 600 + 5 = ________________ 3000 + 70 + 0 = ___________________
