Page 1 of 31 1. INTRODUCTION The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) in Singapore has been implemented since 1984 to cater for intellectually gifted pupils through the provision of a more challenging and enriched curriculum. At the Secondary level, these pupils often continue in schools with Integrated Programmes (IP) if they meet the admission criteria. For pupils gifted in other domains, there are programmes and Specialised Schools that cater to their learning needs and seek to develop their talent, for example, the Art Elective Programme (AEP), Music Elective Programme (MEP), Singapore Sports School and School of the Arts. The GEP seeks to nurture the whole person, so that our children will grow up having a heart for the community and their home, Singapore. The Programme will not only equip pupils with thinking skills, but also imbue values and dispositions such as a sensitivity to and empathy for others, a desire to make a positive difference, and a strong sense of national identity and belonging, so that pupils will find ways to contribute responsibly and creatively as future global citizens. 2. GOALS OF THE GEP • What are the goals of the GEP? The goals of the GEP are to: o develop intellectual depth and higher-level thinking o nurture productive creativity o develop attitudes for self-directed lifelong learning o enhance aspirations for individual excellence and fulfilment o develop a strong social conscience and commitment to serve society and nation o develop moral values and qualities for responsible leadership 3. THE GEP CURRICULUM • How does the curriculum for GEP pupils differ from the national curriculum? Pupils in the GEP study the same subjects as those in the mainstream. However, the curriculum is enriched in terms of breadth and depth of content where appropriate. Subjects that are enriched are English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Chinese Language (CL)/Higher Chinese Language (HCL), and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Pupilstaking Higher Malay/Malay Language and Higher Tamil/Tamil Language will attend MTL lessons with mainstream pupils in the school. Pupils taking Higher Chinese/Chinese Language may have HCL/CL lessons with their GEP or mainstream peers. In the four Special Assistance Plan (SAP) GEP schools, ONLY Higher Chinese Language is offered, and it is an examinable subject at Primary 4. In the non-SAP schools, P4 pupils with the interest and aptitude are offered Higher Mother Tongue Languages (Higher Chinese Language, Higher Malay Language and Higher Tamil Language), but as a non-examinable
