How to Use the IMCI Chart? 1. Select the Appropriate Case Management Chart (Know the age and begin the assessment process) a. Child not yet 2 months: young infant → use assess, classify and treat the sick young infant (page 3) b. Child 2 months: In Group 2 months up to five years → use the assess and classify the sick Child age 2 months up to five years (child has not yet had 5th birthday) 2. Proceed to 6 main steps (in sequence) of the IMCI case management process a. Assess Child or Young Infant (history and PE) b. Classify the Illness - decision on severity of illness c. Identify the Treatment - Chart recommends appropriate treatment for d. Treat the Child - Giving treatment, prescribing drugs or treatments to be given at home, teaching the mother how to carry out the treatments. e. Counsel the Mother - assessing how child is fed and telling caregiver about foods and liquid needs to be given and bring child back to the Health Center f. Give Follow-up Care 3. Remember that IMCI process relies on case detection using simple clinical signs. Treatment is based on action oriented classification rather than the exact diagnosis. 4. IMCI is designed for first level facility like clinics, health centers and outpatient departments. 5.
