- 4 - Trinidad and Tobago Police Academy Induction Training: PB 00136 Evidence & Procedure 2022 (8th Edition) PB 00136 EVIDENCE AND PROCEDURE Course overview This course is highly interactive and is designed to prepare the police trainee to understand the laws which govern the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, gather and secure evidence in a sound and legal manner, institute criminal proceedings against an offender and professionally present the case in a court of law to secure a conviction. Trainees will be expected to engage in practical demonstrations, case studies, group assignments and workbook exercises aligned with each module of this manual. Course objectives The rationale of the rules of Evidence and Procedure is centered on protecting the innocent from conviction, safeguarding the defendant from prejudice and maintaining proper standards of behavior in criminal investigations. Consequently, the objectives of this course are to provide the police trainee with 1. The basic understanding of the criminal justice system in Trinidad and Tobago and the main institutions which support their functioning. 2. The required knowledge and skills in identifying and collecting evidence and presenting such evidence in courts. 3. The information and skills for implementing legal procedures pertaining to the administration of justice.
