Trinidad and Tobago Police Academy Behavioral Science Manual To Our Trainees, Welcome to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Academy! An interesting field of study awaits you under the umbrella of Behavioural Science. We, the members of this faculty, are looking forward to sharing our exciting programme with you as you mature into vibrant and professional police officers. In general, Behavioural Science is a scientific discipline in which the actions and reactions of humans and animals are studied. This is done through observational and experimental methods. Studies in this field includes two broad categories, Neural or Information Sciences and Social or Relational Sciences. Neural or Information Sciences involves the processing of information from the social environment as it relates to decision making, social judgment and social perception. Psychology, Cognitive Science, Psychobiology, Social Cognition, Social Psychology and Social Neuroscience are some of the areas of study that investigate these phenomena. Social or Relational Sciences is associated with the relationships, human interaction, communication networks, and relational strategies between people in a social system. Criminology, Linguistics, Law, Communication Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychiatry, and Psychology are some of the disciplines in this area of study. As an inductee at the Police Academy, you will be exposed to the both arms of Behavioural Science. During your tenure as a police officer, you will be faced with numerous encounters in which this knowledge will be central to your choice of response. These encounters may involve members of your family, your friends, and the general public. Trinidad and Tobago Police Academy Behavioral Science Manual Course Objectives Behavioural Science explores and examines the essence of human behaviour. It provides trainees with the knowledge to deal with complex situations that they may encounter. Trainees will also develop the skills to respond appropriately, when interacting with members of the public. In general, this module includes the soft skills required to be an effective police officer. An officer who is understanding, empathetic and supportive of victims of crime and to those, in need regardless of the circumstances. Performance Objectives The trainee who has been exposed to this course is expected to: 1. Recognize and identify (a) his strengths and challenges in both verbal and non- verbal communication and (b) his likely primary response when expressing himself during his daily engagements. 2. Comprehend the driving force behind his choice of response. 3. Apply personal changes to enhance professional behaviour. 4. Demonstrate positive and professional police conduct when intervening in disputes and other circumstances where members of the public are likely to become aggrieved. 5. Apply the concepts of group dynamics and leadership on a daily basis. 6. Analyse the behaviour of members of the public and apply strategies to defuse antagonistic situations. 7. Analyse the behaviour of members of the public and outline dynamic methods of intervention to other police officers. Table of Contents
