11 - Present They were different people, after all. “We... should end this.” When Lang Feng said this, Zhou Qichen had just pushed open the door of Lang Feng’s room in Yueguo Hotel; they hadn’t even exchanged any greetings or anything. Zhou Qichen stood there and looked down at the bottle of wine he was carrying. Lang Feng had texted him asking if he wanted to meet Tuesday night and had not specified if they were meeting for dinner or sex, so Zhou Qichen really did not expect this. He might’ve digested this news several seconds later, as he looked up and smiled at Lang Feng. “Let’s have a drink together before I leave.” Lang Feng seemed to favor sweeter wine, particularly Riesling wine made in Germany. Zhou Qichen hadn’t drunk this wine before prior to meeting him, but today he went the extra mile to order this from a friend’s online shop. He thought, We can not make love or date each other, but we must drink wine. From a certain perspective, he’d actually been living a hedonistic lifestyle these two years. When Lang Feng saw him smile, he turned away to gaze at the night scenery outside. He most liked Zhou Qichen’s smile, actually. All the smiles there were, smiles that were reserved, unrestrained, teasing, hidden, indifferent. So at this moment, after the words he’d been brewing for a long time came out of his mouth, the sight he was most indisposed to see was also the other man’s smile. After a long, long time, he said, “You agreed to it?” Zhou Qichen headed to the kitchen and took out a corkscrew, and after taking off his coat he opened the bottle of wine, took out two wine glasses, and poured one for both him and Lang Feng. It was very quiet in the room. The glistening liquid sloshed against the walls of the glass, reminding him of that night in Fang Hao’s house the first time they’d met. Zhou Qichen had been making cocktails by himself at the bar, and Lang Feng had asked for a simple margarita, which Zhou Qichen had added double the tequila to. Lang Feng had seen it, noticed it, but he hadn’t pointed it out. Perhaps he’d been way too lenient ever since that moment—not only regarding his desires, but also with the person across from him now. Only after doing all that did Zhou Qichen say, “There’s no reason for me not to, so we’ll go with what you want.” The other man did not try to convince Lang Feng otherwise, which he had expected, and yet he felt sad when he really did hear those words come out from his mouth. Hurting for a short time was better than dragging it out, though. The worse he felt now, the more certain he was that he’d made the rational and correct decision. They’d seen each other seven times, had sex for three times. It was few, sure, but also enough. After Zhou Qichen’s words from
the previous time, Lang Feng knew clearly that nothing would come to fruition if they continued seeing each other; it would be a lose-lose situation. Lang Feng took the wine glass from him after that. They did not take a single step toward the bed, but instead opted to sit down on the couch. Only after that did Lang Feng say, “Won’t you ask me why?” Zhou Qichen said, “You don’t want this to continue. This is the reason, isn’t it?” Lang Feng gazed into his eyes and said, “I don’t want this to continue, but it’s not because I’m no longer interested. It’s the other way round.” Zhou Qichen took a few more sips, and the alcohol went to his head instantly. Even now, he still teased, “Have you fallen in love with me?” He realized how inappropriate this joke was only after blurting it out, but it was already too late. Lang Feng did not hold it against him, but said as he’d planned, “Not to the point of love yet, but I like you quite a lot.” He raised his head, his black eyes shining with direct emotions he did not conceal. Lang Feng was afraid of Zhou Qichen’s smile, while Zhou Qichen, on the other hand, feared his gaze. There was the calmness of a strategizer in his eyes, but also a sharp, striking directness. “You noticed my feelings, and you felt them, because I was trying hard to make them clear. And yet I did not receive a similar signal. It’s not that our bodies aren’t compatible—I think we are, and this, is precisely where the problem is at. I want more, but you can’t give it to me, so we... Let’s end this here. We can still be friends if you want to. We have many mutual friends anyway. If you don’t want to, we can stop seeing each other around.” He finished saying what was on his mind before turning to look at Zhou Qichen’s reaction. And yet Zhou Qichen was just sitting there quietly, a contrast from how he normally was, as if he was digesting what Lang Feng had just said. Lang Feng waited for a long time—a couple minutes for sure—and yet Zhou Qichen remained silent. At this point, the rehearsed script had been acted out to its end, and it was only now when he had the chance to digest what had just happened. Zhou Qichen was just someone like that. He would notice what type of wine Lang Feng liked and bring a bottle over, but he would not stay after they had sex, would not reveal to him too much of what was in the depths of his heart. You could say that he was carefree. He left without a care, that was for sure, and yet when he walked away it was these seemingly offhand and natural gestures that had cut a small chunk off Lang Feng’s heart.
