An endangered species is the one that can become extinct in the near future, according to the Endangered Species Act of the United States. The polar bear is the first animal to be listed as endangered, primarily due to global warming. Increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and other greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere are the main causes of global warming, a form of climate change. Oil and gas heaters, gasoline- powered vehicles and coal-fired power plants all use fossil fuels which cause global warming. The polar bear's habitat is more vulnerable to climate change than many other species. The sea ice in the Arctic is the place where polar bears spend most of their time fishing and storing up fat.
