2 ENGLISH GRAMMAR FOR KIDS UNIT 17: THE IMPERATIVE, SUGGESTIONS The imperative Affirmative Negative Look! Stop! Don’t look! Don’t stop!  We use the imperative when we want to tell someone to do something.  We put the verb at the beginning of the sentence to form the imperative. Example: Come here, James! Stand up!  When we want to tell someone that they must not to do something, we put Don’t beginning of the sentence. Example: Don’t close the door! Don’t sit on the chair!  When we want to be polite, we put the word please at the beginning or the end of the sentence. Example: Please help me! Open the window, please. Suggestions When we suggest something, we often use the following expressions.  Let’s ............ (Let’s .... is followed by a verb in the bare infinitive.) Example: Let’s go to the cinema.  Why don’t we ...............? (Why don’t we .. .... is followed by a verb in the bare infinitive.) Example: Why don’t we go to the cinema?  What/ How about .........? (What/ How about .........? is followed by a verb with an – ING ending.) Example: How about going to the cinema? A B
