My mum and his made friends at those classes that women go to when they are pregnant. They both went swimming together before Kevin and I were born. Our mums always hung out when we were babies and so we did too. At primary school, we were always together. We were both smart, so we could always sit together in class. In our free time, we used to play computer games and watch war movies. We both hated sports. At secondary school, we grew apart though. He got interested in girls and chose to spend time with them, not me. He started going to the gym too, which never interested me. I joined a board games club and met new friends there, but we were never as close as Kevin and I had been. I've only seen him a couple of times since high school. He moved to Dubai and got married. At university, I made friends with a housemate called Charlie. He's completely different from me. I'm quite quiet, but he is really noisy, chatty, friendly, and crazy. He opened up my world, introducing me to nightclubs, rock concerts, and beach holidays. I used to wonder why he liked me. He was so sociable, and I
2 was so serious. But I later found out that his family life had been very difficult as a kid. I was honest and reliable, and his parents were not. After university, Charlie and I got jobs in different cities and saw less of each other. We both had serious relationships, but we both broke up at about the same time. To get over it, the two of us went on holiday together. We had a really good time, and after that, Charlie quit his job and moved to my city. Now we hang out at least once a week. We usually play computer games or go to a bar. He wants me to play racquetball with him, but I'm not interested in that. II. Being close to nature C. Exploring different places TRANSCRIPT A: When did you decide to live in a campervan? B: We moved into a campervan about a year ago when my partner Nick got a job as an auditor. It meant he was away from home for three or four days each week in different parts of the country. I hardly saw him. That was when we had the idea to move into a campervan. That way I could go with him. A: Where do you travel? B: On a normal week we traveled to wherever Nick has to work, usually a town or city somewhere. You park up in a campsite, or failing that, a quiet lane where locals won't mind the van being part of for a few days.
3 We aren't really city people, so at the weekends we head somewhere else in that general region to do some hiking or bike riding and explore a bit. A: Do you have a job? B: Moving into the campervan meant I had to leave my own job, but that didn't matter. I had a rather dull office job at the time. I had this idea I would paint landscapes and sell my artwork as we travelled around. I wouldn't need to earn much because our costs would be much lower. But I soon got bored and frustrated when my pictures didn't sell and the van got cluttered with kit. I missed doing something useful. So, I'm doing an online accountancy course. Once I'm qualified I'll be able to work online from here in the van. I write a blog too. Initially I thought I'd write all these exciting posts about how great it was to be free and maybe get some money from advertising. But that got harder too, because, frankly, moving from place to place where you don't know anyone is tough, especially when it's wet and cold and you're stuck in a van with the same person. Finally, I stopped pretending life was great and wrote the truth and used it as a way to get things off my chest. I doubt if anyone reads it, to be honest. I haven't told my friends about it. A: What is hard about living in a van? B: You see, there are lots of things to think about when you're in a van. Where will you get things delivered? How much stuff can you buy? Where will you do your laundry? These things used to be real issues for us and it still saddens me that I don't have my piano, sewing machine or all that cooking equipment that I used to have in my flat. And I can't just buy any ornament that takes my eye. Thankfully, we've figured out ways to get tools done with minimal hassle now. And with the help of generous friends and campsite owners, we get hot baths often enough. It takes time, though. Going to laundrettes instead of just throwing things in the washing machine, going to supermarkets more often because you can only store so much in your tiny fridge. If you think life on the road will free up your time, think again. But it is nice waking up to the sound of birds and having your day-to-day life affected so closely by the weather and seasons. You don't get that in the flat. If only we could travel to the places we wanted to, like Scotland or the Irish coast and really see the country, that would be fantastic. III. Listen to Todd and Abidemi conversation about their spending habits and saving money and write no more than THREE WORDS for each answer. You will listen twice. 1. Todd encounters a significant challenge in saving money. 2. Despite Abidemi's inclination to spend money on buying clothes, she still chooses to purchase them on sale to maximize discounts and save money in the process. 3. 4 6. Abidemi spends a significant amount of money on trips to different countries each year. 7. Abidemi spends most of her travel expenses on plane tickets . 8. Todd regularly purchases his dinner from the supermarket every day. 9. Despite not being a proficient cook, Abidemi still wants to enjoy homemade dishes. TRANSCRIPT Abidemi: Todd, are you good at saving money? Todd: No, I'm terrible. I waste money. I waste so much money. Abidemi: How? Todd: Well, I don't buy things on sale. I don't use coupons. I buy anything I see. So, when I shop, I don't look at prices. I just see the food or the thing and I get it and I buy it and I pay for it. And, then it's sometimes very expensive. So, I just waste money. I don't budget. I need to budget my money but I don't budget my money. What about you? Are you good at saving money? Abidemi: I don't think I'm too bad at saving money. I look at prices a lot. I also buy a lot of things on sale. So, I'm able to save some money. Todd: So, you look for discounts. Abidemi: Yes, I do. Todd: Do you use coupons or special offers? Abidemi: No, I don't, but if I see some I will use them. Todd: So, do you waste money on anything? Like, maybe eating out, buying clothes, renting movies? Abidemi: I waste money on buying clothes. Todd: Oh, okay! Abidemi: But, I save a little bit because I buy them on sale. Todd: Ah, do you buy things online? Abidemi: No, I don't. I usually go into the stores to shop. Todd: I'm good with clothes too. So, I don't spend much money on clothes. I only shop maybe once a year. Or, I only shop if I need something, like it's really cold and I need a jacket. Abidemi: I see. Todd: And, I'm really bad, so I often only wear clothes people give to me. Abidemi: That's good! Todd: Yeah, so I get shirts or ties for Christmas gifts or a birthday gift, and I do that. My mom often asks ... every year, my mom asks, "What do you want for Christmas?", "What do you want for your birthday?" And I'll say, "Underwear and socks" or "Socks and T-shirts". And so, she buys them for me and then I don't have to buy them. Abidemi: Wow. Sounds like you're an easy person to give a present to.
