● Phonetics and Phonology - Phonetics: matters of relevance to sound (their description(s),...). Pronunciation, in the mouth/vocal tract (theoretical & practical knowledge) - Phonology: the study of sounds (distribution, functions, patterns,...). Rules: in mind (theoretical knowledge) Segmental aspects: - Phonemes: + Consonant sounds + Vowel sounds Suprasegmental/Prosodic aspects: - Syllable - Word stress - Weak forms - Assimilation, elision, linking - Rhythm - Intonation (patterns) ● Dialect vs. Accent - Dialect: an overall way of speaking, not just pronunciation, usage of distinct vocab choices n grammatical patterns. - Accent: pronunciation associated w certain regions. Learner accents’ are influenced by the native. ● Phoneme vs. Phone: - Phoneme: + Mental representation of sound in the mind + Swapping phonemes changes the meaning of words - Phone: + The actual sound produced + Allophones: different versions of the phone ● Phonetics: 3 main branches (review intro to ling) - Articulatory phonetics: the journey of sound within our body (precisely, articulator) ⇒ mainly study - Acoustic phonetics: the journey of a sound when it leaves ur mouth n travel through the air - Auditory phonetics: the journey of sounds when it enters sb’s ear(s) n get processed there.
