46 - 50 Girl:Would you like something to drink? Boy:Um, well, I’d like a soda, but I’ll just have water! After those lessons on junk food and drink, I’m trying not to eat and drink so much sugar. Girl:OK. There should be some in the fridge. Yes. Here you are. Boy:Thanks. Right. So, we have to do this project on food addiction. How shall we start? Girl:Let’s make a list of reasons why people get addicted and then look up information about each one. Boy:Right. Well, I guess the first reason is because the food tastes nice. Girl:Yes. Second, I think people sometimes eat too much because they are unhappy. Eating makes them feel happier, for some reason. Boy:Ah, that’s interesting! Another thing is advertising on kids’ TV programs. Children see the adverts and then they ask their parents to buy candy or cola. Girl:Yes. Or buy it themselves when they’re older. A lot of these unhealthy foods are cheaper than healthy ones, aren’t they? So that’s another reason. Boy:Right! So, let’s find out why people keep eating unhealthy food. Is it because it tastes nice? Or because the sugar in the food gives you energy? I know companies put a lot of sugar in things like burgers. Girl:Well, it says on this website that, when you eat sugar, your body releases a chemical which makes you feel happier. Boy:Really! That’s scary! I suppose that’s why sad people often eat junk food. Girl:Yes. But then maybe they get obese, and that makes them even more unhappy. Boy:That’s scary, too! Everybody in my family eats too much junk food. But I think most of them are happy. Girl:Well, that’s only one reason for addiction, isn’t it? Maybe in the case of your family, people eat junk food because everyone else around them does. It’s called peer pressure. Boy:What is? Girl:Feeling that you have to do something because your friends or family do it. Boy:Right. Peer pressure. I’ll remember that. Maybe we should add that to the list of reasons. Girl:We should. 51 - 55 Speaker 1: It’s everywhere you go in the city, despite all the trash cans which the council has installed. People prefer dropping stuff on the sidewalk or even throwing cans and candy wrappers from cars when they are stuck in traffic jams. And, of course, if one person throws some trash on the sidewalk, it encourages other people to drop their trash! Speaker 2: I use my car every day, even though it takes me 40 minutes to go 10 blocks. But I have no choice, because the buses are also stuck in the traffic and there is no subway station near me or near my office. If the city had a proper way of getting people to work and home again from all parts of the city, we wouldn’t have a problem on the streets. Speaker 3: It’s awful. I don’t know why we have such a big problem. We are a rich city in a rich country, but still people have to sleep on the sidewalks, even when the weather is really cold. Some people say they should get a job, but I’m not sure there are enough jobs now for everyone in the city. Speaker 4: I’m actually afraid to go out after dark, and I’m sometimes even scared walking around during the day. They say that every square foot of the city streets is covered by at least one camera now, but there still seem to be a lot of criminals around according to the reports in the papers every day. Speaker 5: It’s much worse than when I was young. Do you know? We used to fish in the river through the city center when I was a young kid, and then we would take the fish home to have for dinner that night. Then people started to build factories everywhere, and soon there were no fish at all. The river was too dirty. And, of course, the air is so bad now that some people have medical problems just because they live here. ---THE END---
