CARL BALITA REVIEW CENTER SOCIAL WORK BOARD REVIEW NOTES RESEARCH A diligent and systematic inquiry or investigation to a subject in order to discover and revise facts, theories, application and to study thoroughly so as to present details. “To search again or to take another more careful look or to find out more” (Selltiz et.al, 1976) A structured inquiry which utilizes acceptable scientific method to solve a problem and to create a new knowledge generally applicable (Grinnell, 1993). A cyclical process of finding answers to a problem through collection, analysis, and interpretation of data and applying the findings to practice (Quieta, 2000). Scientific investigation of phenomena which includes collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of facts that links man’s speculation of reality (Calmorin, 2002). A systematic and scientific process of gathering and interpreting data for the solution of a problem, for prediction, for the discovery of truth, or for the expansion of verification of existing knowledge, all for the preservation and improvement of the quality of human life (Calderon et.al, 1993). Characteristics of Research 1. It is purposive – focus on a specific problem, with the intent of solving it 2. It is systematic – follows a logical, step by step, and orderly manner 3. It is scientific – guided body of knowledge 4. It is empirical – based on facts, evidences Characteristics of a Good Research 1. Systematic, controlled and empirical 2. Analytical, objective, unbiased and logical 3. Accurate investigation, observation and description 4. Requires patience and effort 5. Requires courage Primary Purpose of Research 1. To provide a specific way of knowing and producing knowledge and knowledge sources. 2. To add to and refine existing knowledge 3. To discover new facts about (or understand better) a phenomenon. 4. To provide a basis for decision-making. 5. To improve existing interventions. 6. To develop new or enhance models of practice. Research as Scientific Inquiry ● Inductive Research It is exploratory, flexible and based on qualitative observation. Involves starting from specific premises and forming a general conclusion. Aims at developing a theory. ● Deductive Research It is about proving something and is structured and based on quantitative analysis. Involves using general premises to form a specific conclusion. Aims at testing an existing theory. Research vs Social Work Research Research is common to all profession while Social Work Research aimed at the improvement of practice and/or services and improve/build theoretical foundation. SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH A systematic collection of available evidence (psychological, emotional, physical, social, economic, environmental, political, etc.) that can help us understand better the situation of an individual, group, institution, or a community toward enhancing their social functioning and quality of life. It aims to describe and explain social work practice and realities in their cultural contexts, through scientific and participatory methods of inquiry, generally for practice effectiveness and program evaluation towards a just society. It aims to provide knowledge that social workers need to solve everyday practice problems. It uphold and advance the values and mission of the profession.
