PHARMD GURU Page 1 DEFINITION: World Health Organization defines medication adherence as “the extent to which a person’s behavior in taking medications corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a health care provider”. FACTORS AFFECTING THE MEDICATION ADHERENCE: World Health Organization (WHO) has termed medication adherence as multi dimensional phenomena and classified the factors affecting medication adherence in to the following classes. 1) Social and economic factors 2) Health care system factors 3) Condition related factors 4) Therapy related factors 5) Patient related factors 1) SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS: Social and economic factors for non-adherence to medication include people with low health literacy, without family or social support network, unstable living conditions (homelessness), busy schedules at office or at the business, limited access to health care facilities, inability or difficulty of access to the pharmacy, high cost of medications, cultural and lay benefits about illness and treatment 2) HEALTH CARE SYSTEM FACTORS: Factors under the health care system contributing to medication non-adherence includes poor relationship between the provider and the patient, poor communication of the provider, disparity between health belief models of the provider and the patient. Inadequate reinforcement by the health care provider, lack of a system to educate both provider and the patients about the disease, and its appropriate management, and lack of continuity of care also are the contributing factors for medication non- adherence.
