Y2 English 2014b – 2024 Week 16 Notes 3 giraffe Read this (page 2) 1. I went to visit the zoo one day To see the giant giraffe. He bends right down to eat his food; I must say it made me laugh! 2. His neck is really very large, He can’t fit in a cage! His eyes looked sadly all around, I got angry at this stage! 3. I thought of all his freedom gone, He might as well be in bed! He can’t decide to run away, He’s locked up here instead! 1. (page 3) Explain to students that the rhyme has words with a soft g sound. 2. When g is in front of an i, y, or e, it is soft and says /j/. For example: giant, gypsy, and gem. When g is in front of any other letter, it says /g/. 3. Instruct students to write the soft g words they hear. 4. Select student/s to add any other words that have a soft g sound. 5. Instruct students to re-write the following sentence with correct punctuation. “Why do I have be locked up in a cage?” asked the giant giraffe. 6. (page 4) Encourage students to write their own question for the giraffe, using as many list words as they can. 7. Select student/s for examples. 8. If the letter after the g is any other letter, it will most likely make the hard sound and then we’ll be able to remember how to pronounce the word.”
