New lesson (35’) Activity 1: Pre-speaking (12’) a) Objective: To prepare Ss for the speaking activity by introducing the pronunciation of the /lz/ sound. b) Content: Tasks b, c, d on page 42; Practice on page 43. c) Expected outcomes: Ss can pronounce correctly the /lz/ sound and practice this sound in a conversation. d) Organization of the activity: TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES Task b. Listen to the words and focus on the underlined letters. - Have Ss look at the words and listen to the pronunciation of the words. Task c. Listen and circle the words you hear. - Have Ss look at the words and underline the /lz/ sounds. - Play the audio file CD1-Track 52. - Have Ss circle the words they hear. - Check the answers key with the whole class. Task d. Take turns saying the words in task c while your partner points to them. - Have Ss work in pairs and pronounce the words correctly. - Correct Ss’ mistakes if necessary. Practice: a. Practice the conversation. You're a scientist discussing ways that your government can fight global warming. Complete the table with ideas from the reading or your own ideas. In pairs: Discuss and agree on two solutions which you think are the most effective. - Present the table using DCR. - Have some pairs read the model sentences in front of the whole class. - Divide Ss into pairs and have them work in pairs in 6 to 8 minutes. - Correct Ss’ answers if necessary. - Listen to T. - Listen to the model sentences. - Work in pairs to brainstorm the ideas in the table and practice speaking. Activity 3: Post-speaking (10’) a) Objective: to practice critical thinking and speaking skills. b) Content: Task b on page 39. c) Expected outcomes: Ss can develop productive (speaking) skills using the learned vocabulary and structures with the correct pronunciation. d) Organization of the activity: TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES Task b. Join another pair and compare your choices. Did you choose the same solutions? Why (not)? - Have Ss mingle with other pairs with a note to write down what they discussed with other pairs. - Have Ss prepare for their presentation in 2 minutes. - Call some Ss to present in front of the class about the differences from other pairs. - Mingle with other pairs and note down the ideas. - Prepare the presentation. - Listen to other pairs and provide feedback if necessary.
