WORLD HUNGER Nobody wants to worry about where their next meal is coming from. Yet over 800 million people around the world – most of them in developing countries – suffer from chronic food deprivation on a daily basis. Like all complex issues that impact us at a global level, the causes of world hunger are multifaceted. POVERTY: Poverty is the principal cause of global hunger. The unequal distribution of income and lack of resources in developing countries means that millions of people simply cannot afford the land or farming supplies they need to grow, or otherwise gain access to nutritious food. CLIMATE: Increasingly, climate variability and extremes are becoming a key force behind world hunger. Soaring temperatures and shifting patterns in rainfall have adverse effects on crops and livestock, which in turn have significant implications for food security and nutrition. CONFLICT & INSTABILITY: The 2018 Global Report on Food Crises revealed that conflict and instability are the primary culprits behind food insecurity in 18 countries, accounting for 60 per cent of the global total. o deprivation /ˌdeprɪˈveɪʃn/ (n) = the fact of not having something that you need, like enough food, money or a home: sự thiếu ... o multifaceted /ˌmʌltiˈfæsɪtɪd/ (adj) = having many different aspects to be considered: đa diện, nhiều mặt cần xem xét o unequal /ʌnˈiːkwəl/ (adj) = in which people are treated in different ways or have different advantages in a way that seems unfair: không công bằng o distribution /ˌdɪstrɪˈbjuːʃn/ (n) = the way that something is spread or exists over a particular area or among a particular group of people: sự phân bổ o lack of = the state of not having something or not having enough of something: việc thiếu/không đủ ... o to gain access to something = to have the right or opportunity to use something: có quyền tiếp cận với ... o climate variability = short-term changes in climate that take place over months, seasons and years: sự dao động khí hậu o soaring /ˈsɔːr.ɪŋ/ (adj) = rising very quickly to a high level: tăng nhanh o conflict /ˈkɑːnflɪkt/ (n) = fighting between two or more groups of people or countries: xung đột o instability /ˌɪnstəˈbɪləti/ (n) = the quality or state of being likely to change or fail suddenly: sự bất ổn Source: https://www.worldvision.ca/stories/food/world-hunger-facts-how-to-help SYNONYMS o the principal cause of ... » a key force behind ... » the primary culprits behind ...
