And there are a range of different programming languages you can use - HTML, for example, is the computer code used to create web pages. A: I see. That’s why primary children have been taught Information and Communications Technology, or ICT, at school for a long time. B: And you know, under the new curriculum, there’s a much greater emphasis on learning about computers and teaching children how to use code. In some specialised schools, children as young as six get practical experience of designing and writing computer programs so that they understand the basic principles of computer science. A: Interesting. But I guess not everything will change; kids will still be learning stuff like using emails, right? It’s just that now they’ll also be taught how things like the Internet actually work. Audio script: The destruction of animals’ or plant species’ habitats is one of the numerous reasons that might push them into extinction. Deforestation as well as soil, air, and water pollution are usually the main causes. Human exploitation of wild animals is another cause of endangerment. For example, unrestricted whale hunting during the last century led to many whale species becoming seriously endangered. The demand for animal parts, which are used in certain foods or medicines, further contributes to this issue. Additionally, the introduction of non-native species into an ecosystem can have detrimental effects on existing species. A prime example is the brown tree snake. Unintentionally brought to Guam by cargo ships, the snakes caused the extinction of 10 out of the 11 native bird species in the island’s forests. Organisations such as the World Wild Fund for Nature works to increase public awareness of endangered plants and animals. These groups work with governmental bodies to protect threatened or endangered species. But in order to effectively preserve these species, it is essential to educate people about the importance of conservation. Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet. They help people thrive and survive by, for example, purifying water and air and providing people with jobs; some 13.2 million people across the world have a job in the forest sector and another 41 million have a job that is related to the sector. Many animals also rely on forests. Forests are home to more than three-quarters of the world’s life on land. Forests also play a critical role in reducing climate change because they act as a carbon sink - soaking up carbon dioxide that would otherwise be free in the atmosphere and contribute to ongoing changes in climate. But forests around the world are under threat, which affects these benefits. The threats are deforestation and forest degradation. The main cause of deforestation is agriculture (poorly planned infrastructure is developing as a big threat too) and the main cause of forest degradation is illegal tree-cutting. In 2019, the tropics lost close to 30 soccer fields’ worth of trees every single minute. Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rain forests because these forests are home to much of the world’s biodiversity. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest change for cattle raising. Deforestation in this region is particularly common in more populated areas, roads and rivers, but even remote areas have been polluted when valuable gold and oil are discovered. Question 27.
