2 6. There isn’t any pollution in the area at the moment. T Everyone is really angry. We love this village. It's quiet, green and beautiful. There's hardly any traffic and the air is fresh and clean. But now they're building a shopping centre on the fields over there. They're also building a motorway through the valley and the woods. It's terrible. - Speaker 2: 7. There is a supermarket on the right of the office block. F 8. The office block has two floors. F I work in an office block in the centre of town. It's an ugly grey building on a busy street. The noise of the traffic is awful. There's a hospital opposite, a supermarket on the left and a car park on the right. I can't see any green spaces from my window. The only advantage of working here is that I can take the stairs up to my office every morning. It's on the sixth floor. So at least I can be a bit active every day. - Speaker 3: 9. Speaker 3 walks to work. T 10. When it rains, he gets a bus with his friend. F I work on a farm. It's called Hambrook Farm and it's near a small lake. I get up at four every morning and go to work on foot. I have to cross a small bridge and go along the path past the lake. It's a lovely way to start the day. If it's raining a lot, my friend John, who lives next door, sometimes gives me a lift. Everyone is very friendly here. We always help each other when we can. III. 3 Today on Radio Live, we’re talking about the latest YouTube celebrity – she’s 26-year-old Angel Collinson and she’s from the US state of Utah (11-12). Angel is a champion skier, and she also works in films which involve ski scenes. She’s even won an award for her skiing performance at the International Free-Skiing Film Festival in Montreal, Canada. But now she’s more famous for surviving a 300-metre fall down a mountain in Alaska (13). She was at work that day making a movie when she hit some ice and then lost control. Someone filmed Angel as she fell down the steep rock face and rolled down the snowy mountain side. The fall took around thirty seconds (14). It felt a lot longer when I watched it! She covered her head with her hands until she stopped. It was amazing that she only hurt two fingers on one hand. Her support team were in a rescue helicopter above (15). When she stopped in the snow, she shouted to her team: ‘I’m OK ... I’m fine.’ What an amazing woman! And what a lucky woman! More than 350,000 people watched her fall on YouTube last month. Now they’re using the video to help make the sport safer for everyone. IV. Listen to the recording and answer each question with NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS. (5 points) 16. Who is the man in the conversation? - teacher 17. What do students have to follow to prevent accidents in the lab? - safety procedures/ safety rules 18. What can’t students do in the lab until clean-up is finished and they have washed their hands? - Eat, drink 19. What should Tessa do to her hair when working with naked flames or chemicals? - tie (back) / pin 20. Can students wear T-shirt or trainers in the laboratory? - No TRANSCRIPT TUTOR: Now Vincent and Tessa, I’ve asked the two of you to come and see me because I’m a bit concerned after that incident in the science lab last week. I realise that neither of you have had much experience in a laboratory before ... VINCENT: Well, we mostly just studied theory at high school ... TESSA: and we rarely got the opportunity to carry out any experiments. TUTOR: Fair enough. But we must all abide by certain safety procedures – the last thing we want is for one of our students to get hurt. TESSA: We understand that. TUTOR: Our priority is to make sure that the chemistry laboratory is a safe place and, actually, accidents can
4 easily be prevented if you just think about what you’re doing at all times. TESSA: It sounds simple enough. TUTOR: It is if you always use good judgement, observe safety rules and follow directions. VINCENT: We’ve read the rules on the poster inside the lab. TUTOR: And yet last week you were seen working in the lab without eye protection. TESSA: What do you mean? I was wearing my glasses. TUTOR: Prescription glasses are not safety glasses – you must always wear the goggles provided – you’ll find they fit quite comfortably over your ordinary glasses. VINCENT: Oh, I see. TUTOR: Just make a habit of putting them on before you start and keep them on until you are finished. And another thing, never eat or drink while in the laboratory. TESSA: What – not even water? TUTOR: Not even water – at least not until after clean-up. Then, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water and dry them on a clean towel first. And Tessa, your hair should be tied back when you’re in the lab. TESSA: It’s not that long. TUTOR: Still, it poses a hazard when you’re working with chemicals or a naked flame. If you can’t tie it back or pin it up, see if you can tuck it into a cap or something. TESSA: Yes, I can do that. TUTOR: Thank you. Now, Vincent, last week you wore a tee-shirt and trainers in the lab. The rules clearly state that long-sleeved shirts and leather shoes must be worn. VINCENT Oh, yes, I remember – I was late getting back from sports practice and I didn’t have time to change. TUTOR: Well, it mustn’t happen again. VINCENT: Okay, I’ll see that it doesn’t. TUTOR: Good. As for the rest of the safety precautions, refer to the safety poster inside the lab and you shouldn’t have any problems. PART B: PRONUNCIATION I. Choose the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently from that of the others. 21. A. learned B. rained C. raised D. closed /lɜːnɪd/ /reɪnd/ /reɪzd/ /kləʊzd/ 22. A. considerate B. tolerate C. concentrate D. demonstrate /kənˈsɪdərət/ /ˈtɒləreɪt/ /ˈkɒnsəntreɪt/ /ˈdɛmənstreɪt/ 23. A. manufacture B. champagne C. changeable D. question
