Anyone can build a structure that stands, but it takes an engineer to build one that barely stands. Bolted connections allow for the continuity and transfer of loads between members by fastening them using bolts. Bolt Nut Washer Bolt Head Bolts Connected Members Bolted connections may either be designed as: • bearing type: where slippage is allowed, and the load is transferred by bearing forces between the bolt and the connected members. • slip-critical type: where the load is transferred by friction in the joint due to a designed pre-tension force on the bolt.
