January 2023 World’s first vaccine for Honey Bees has been approved:  The world‘s first vaccine for honeybees has been approved for use by the US government.  The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted a conditional license for a vaccine created by Dalan Animal Health, a US biotech company, to help protect honeybees from American foulbrood disease. India ranks first in milk production in the world:  According to production data of Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), India is the highest milk producer i.e., rank first position in the world contributing 24% of global milk production in the year 2021-22. New Integrated Food Security Scheme:  The New Integrated Food Security Scheme for providing free foodgrains to Antodaya Ann Yojna (AAY) and Primary Household (PHH) beneficiaries has been named PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana ((PMGKAY).  The integrated scheme will strengthen the provisions of NFSA, 2013 in terms of accessibility, affordability and availability of foodgrains for the poor. Background  The PMGKAY was first introduced in 2020 during the Covid- 19 pandemic, and was designed to provide 5kg free foodgrains to eligible ration card holders under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA).  Initially set to expire in December 2022, the scheme was extended till December 2023 and now, it has been extended for an additional five years. Beneficiaries  The Act legally entitled upto 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population to receive subsidized food grains under Targeted Public Distribution System.  About two thirds of the population therefore is covered under the Act to receive highly subsidized foodgrains.  It encompasses two categories of ration card holders: Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH).  As a step towards women empowerment, the eldest woman of the household of age 18 years or above is mandated to be the head of the household for the purpose of issuing ration cards under the Act.  Intended Beneficiaries: 81.35 crore Implementation period 1st January 2023 - 31st December 2023

FSSAI notifies first-ever regulatory standards for basmati rice:  For the first time in the country, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has specified identity standards for basmati rice (including brown basmati, milled basmati, parboiled brown basmati, and milled parboiled basmati).  As per these standards, basmati rice shall possess natural fragrance characteristic of basmati rice and be free from artificial colouring, polishing agents, and artificial fragrances.  These standards also specify various identity and quality parameters for basmati rice such as average size of grains and their elongation ratio after cooking, maximum limits of moisture, amylose content, uric acid, defective or damaged grains and incidental presence of other non- basmati rice etc.
www.iaritoppers.in Whatsapp : +91-9694095242 Page | 4 February 2023 Govt plans 10 ‘Clean Plant Centres’ to boost fruit crop production:  The Program will be launched with an outlay of 2,200 crores (in the next 7 years till 2030) to boost availability of disease-free, quality planting material for high value horticultural crops.  The 10 centres will be established for fruit crops like apple, walnut, almond, grapes, mango, pomegranate, etc., and will be fully funded by the Centre. Government approves nano liquid DAP:  The Government of India approved the nano-liquid DAP fertiliser for the benefit of farmers and to make the country self-reliant, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya informed.  “IFFCO will manufacture nano DAP which will prove to be a game changer for Indian agriculture and economy.” Wheat Variety (HD-3385):  ICAR scientists have developed a new climate-smart variety of wheat, amenable to early sowing and escaping the impact of temperature spikes in March. This new variety is named HD-3385.  This new variety of wheat has been specifically designed to withstand the high temperatures that are prevalent in many parts of India. March 2023 Resham Keet Bima:  Uttarakhand launched the country‘s first “Resham Keet Bima” programme to safeguard its sericulturists. India‟s first cloned gir calf “Ganga”:  The National Dairy Research Institute has produced the first-ever clone of a calf belonging to the indigenous Gir cow breed. The calf has been named “Ganga”.  Scientists used three animals for producing this calf, Oocyte was taken from the Sahiwal breed, a somatic cell from the Gir breed and a surrogate animal was a cross-breed.
