Format Updates to the Comprehensive World Languages Exam (LOTE) Part 4 Please inform World Language staff members about the following updates to the format of Comprehensive World Language Exam Part 4 Writing Tasks. In order to provide students with the most equitable test-taking experience, the NYC DOE-developed exams’ student booklet template will provide Part 4 instructions in both the Target Language and English. The Part 4 changes will impact the NYC DOE-developed Comprehensive World Language (Checkpoint B) in all languages. Effective June 2022, students will see a side-by-side translation of the instructions for Part 4 Writing Tasks in English on the left-hand side, and the target language (i.e. Spanish) on the right-hand side. The directions and requirements guidance will remain the same every year, while the prompt without suggestions will change year-over-year.
World Language Exam Format Changes for June 2022 Exams - Major Changes to NYC DOE-developed Checkpoint B Exams Updates to NYC DOE developed World Language Exams Description Previous Version NYC Developed Checkpoint B exams were called “Comprehensive Examination for Languages Other Than English”. Previously, physical copies of the Sourcebook of Speaking Tasks consisting of 600 tasks were provided to schools to administer the speaking portion of the exam. Part 4A and 4B instructions and tasks were provided to students in English. Previously, each task was accompanied by “What you may wish to include” bullet points. Description Revised Version effective June 2022 NYC Developed Checkpoint B exams are now called “Comprehensive Examination in World Languages”. The Sourcebook of Speaking Tasks will be provided digitally to schools in time for the June 2022 administration. Part 4A and 4B instructions and tasks are now provided to students in English and the language of the assessment. Tasks will no longer be accompanied by “What you may wish to include bullet points.” Here’s how the changes will impact the directions, answer format, word count and scoring: Direction and Stimuli Language Available Options Answer Format Word Count Suggestions Point Value Part 4A/4B Previous Version English Students must respond to Part 4A, and choose one of two 4B options to respond to.
