3 education. However, at that time, no one instructed me so I kept struggling with scores in a feeling of inferiority but tried to rebel in vain. Everything changed when I entered University with more study options, flexible schedule and broad social interaction. I took advanced classes with senior students, got maximum scores for literature classes, attended more classes at other institutes, took part in a number of contests, seminars and community services. Owing to the diverse social activities, I realized that when we have freedom, we will take more responsibility with our life and making friends with better people will better us also. If granted a Fulbright program of study in the United States, I will come back to Vietnam to be a lecturer of Intercultural Communication at university for some years. After that, I am taking Doctoral studies of Education and work at United Nations Alliance of Civilizations for peace- building education projects. Finally, I am coming back to Vietnam to set up a Learning Center about peace and global citizenship. Making contribution from civil society is my approach to support the reform efforts of our education system. To sum up, I believe that I have prepared myself for being a suitable candidate of Fulbright program. I will do my best to make the study benefit for my career goals and the development of education in Vietnam.
4 FULBRIGHT - STUDY OBJECTIVES You should take great care to write a clear and very detailed description of the program you want to pursue. Clearly identify the area(s) within your field of study in which you want to specialize or concentrate; what you want to accomplish during your program, why you want to specialize or concentrate in your field, what aspects of the field interest you most. Describe the kind of program you expect to undertake, and explain how your study plan fits in with your previous training and your future objectives. Remember, this is your opportunity to state what you hope to achieve during your program. If granted the Fulbright scholarship, I plan to pursue the field of International Educational Development (IED). I have special interest in two sub-areas: education for social change and peace education. I first would like to learn about the interplay among education, culture and society. How is education shaped by the dynamic and changing structures of society and culture? How does education, in its turn, make cultural products for society? In my view, social change as both the cause for and effect from education is of critical importance to contemporary Vietnam. In the pre-reform period, from 1975 to 1986, the Vietnamese curriculum was highly uniformed by the authorities, focusing on an image of post-war citizens who rebuilt the country following state- imposed agenda. After the reform in 1986, practices of education became more pluralized, competitive and thus more complex due to the fast pace of marketization and privatization. These transformations enabled new opportunities for social changes, as much as they engendered alternative forms of political, cultural, and social injustice. Through my own observation and experience, I realized that Vietnamese teachers, students, families, and civil society are performing creative strategies to challenge the old model of politically imposed education. These agents are experimenting alternative practices of education, such as using social media, homeschooling, participating in projects facilitated by non-governmental organizations, or in my case, initiating Spread Out Academic Club - a self-study club for young people. I would like to gain more knowledge and skills that would support me to evaluate the contemporary education landscape in Vietnam, so that I can further contribute in promoting positive social changes through education, and in mitigating undesirable effects of
