TRANSCRIPT MAN: Hello Jane, come in and sit down. WOMAN: Hello Dr. Hart, thank you. MAN: Now we're here to discuss the presentation that you gave in my seminar earlier this week. WOMAN: That's right. MAN: So, the first thing is about your subject. You chose to talk about Levi Hill's contribution to the development of color photography. Why did you choose that subject? WOMAN: Well, I've always been interested in photography and the intriguing story around Levi Hill seemed to fit in with the unit we're studying. MAN: Can you explain again the link between Hill's own invention and the invention in France is a dagger type? WOMAN: Of course, the dagger type was invented by Louis Daguerre in 1839 and it was the only known type of photographic process commonly used in the 1840s. Levi Hill was greatly interested in photography and learned about dagger types in the early 1840s. Daguerre exposed a silver copper plate to light, fuming it with mercury vapor and then removed the sensitivity to light with a cocktail of chemicals. Hill was interested in what Daguerre did but actually created a quite different process. MAN: So there isn't much similarity at all. WOMAN: Not really. I suppose they're often compared because Hill called his invention a hillotype and this was based on how dagger type was derived from Daguerre's name. MAN: Why was there so much interest in the hillotype? WOMAN: Well with dagger types only a black and white picture was achievable. Hill claimed that with his process a color picture was possible. MAN: You say claimed. Was it not true? WOMAN: There was quite a lot of controversy about it. Hill was attacked, mostly by professional photographers, who lost business because they had clients who wanted color pictures. At first, Hill did not publicize his method but eventually he revealed his secrets. The process eventually described though was very complex and difficult to make work and people soon lost interest. Hill was not able to defend his process for long as he died soon after publication, mainly because of his exposure to the harmful chemicals
3 that he used in his experiments. MAN: What is the historical judgment? WOMAN: Some of Hill's original images have been analyzed and although it's clear that some have been enhanced with artificial color, in many of the images it has been generally reproduced. Part 2: You will hear a recording about CTE – a brain condition. For questions 6-10, decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). Write your answers in the corresponding numbered boxes provided. (10 points) 6. CTE is associated with the malfunction in the brain and psychiatric disorders. T 7. Dr. Daniel Perl studied the effect of CTE in the brains of deceased service members. T 8. CTE was the main reason for the death of many military personnel. F 9. New England Journal of Medicine concluded that contact sports caused the condition of CTE. F 10. Dr. Perl claimed the lasting effects of bomb blasts on human’s brains. T TRANSCRIPT Thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan sustained concussions and other brain injuries from roadside bombs. But a new study suggests these injuries are not leading to a brain condition often seen in former boxers and football players, and pairs John Hamilton reports. In contact sports, concussions increase the risk of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. It's a brain condition associated with dementia and a range of psychiatric disorders (Q6). So many doctors have worried that CTE might be a factor in the mental health problems experienced by U.S. combat troops exposed to bomb blasts. Dr. Daniel Pearl is a professor of pathology at the Uniform Services University in Bethesda (Q7). Their families were saying that their personalities had changed, they were having trouble sleeping. "We know that the suicide problem is substantial. PTSD is prevalent." CTE can only be diagnosed after death. So Pearl and a team decided to study a collection of brains donated by the families of deceased service members (Q7). "We said this was the opportunity to look at those brains and see how much CTE played a role in this problem." The team looked at 225 brains, including many from military personnel who'd been exposed to bomb blasts. Pearl says CTE was rare. "We could only find 10 cases that met the diagnostic criteria for CTE (Q8). And then we found that all 10 had played contact sports." The numbers are too small to say that contact sports caused the condition (Q9). But Pearl says the findings, which appear in the New England Journal of Medicine, do support another conclusion. "Serving in the military and being exposed to blast is probably not a significant risk factor for developing CTE." (Q8) Pearl says that's a good thing, but he adds that bomb blasts do injure the brain in ways that can have lasting
4 effects. "And shouldn't go away thinking that because we didn't find CTE, the brain's normal, that's clearly not the case." (Q10) Pearl says a growing body of evidence shows that exposure to bomb blasts can raise the risk of problems like PTSD. John Hamilton, NPR News. Part 3: You will hear a radio programme in which two people, Olivia Wilde and Michael Asimwe, are discussing the African tour company they work for.
