UNIT 5 – GLOBAL WARMING TEST 4 A-LISTENING Task 1: Listen to the passage carefully. After listening, decide if the following statements are true (T) or false (F). TRUE FALSE Question 1: Black carbon is a type of gas released from burning fossil fuels. X Question 2: One of the sources of black carbon is forest fires. X Question 3: Black carbon cools down the atmosphere by reflecting sunlight. X Question 4: Black carbon particles, when inhaled, can potentially cause respiratory diseases. X Question 5: Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere longer than black carbon. X Question 6: The reduction of black carbon emissions will only benefit the climate, not air quality. X Black carbon, commonly referred to as soot, is a form of particulate air pollution (1). It is tiny, dark particles that emerge from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. Forest fires, stoves used for cooking, vehicles running on diesel, and industrial emissions are some of the key sources of black carbon (2). When released into the atmosphere, these fine pärieles can have a twofold effect. First, by directly absorbing sunlight, black carbon warms the surrounding air, leading to localized temperature rises (3). Second, when it settles on snow and ice, it can reduce their reflectivity, making them absorb more heat and melt faster. Moreover, black carbon has implications for human health. Inhaled particies can lead to respiratory problems and other related diseases. (4) The major difference between black carbon and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide is its longevity in the atmosphere. While carbon dioxide can persist for many years, black carbon remains airborne for only a few weeks. (5) However, its immediate impact on regional climate and health is a pressing concern for scientists and policymakers. Efforts to reduce black carbon emissions can not only help mitigate global temperature rise but also improve air quality in urban and rural areas. (6) Task 2: Listen to the passage carefully. After listening, choose the best answer to each question. Question 1: What does global warming refer to? A. The release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. B. The long-term increase in Earth's surface temperature. C. The frequent occurrence of extreme weather events. D. The burning of fossil fuels for energy. Question 2: Which of the following is a greenhouse gas mentioned in the passage? A. Oxygen B. Methane C. Carbonate D. Nitrogen
Question 3: Why does the Earth heat up due to greenhouse gases? A. They reflect all the sunlight. B. They release heat into space. C. They trap heat from the sun. D. By supporting cleaner energy sources. D. By releasing more methane into the atmosphere. Global warming is a significant concern in today's world. It refers to the long-term rise in Earth's average surface temperature due to human-made factors (1). The primary cause of global warming is the release of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere (2). These gases trap heat from the sun, preventing it from escaping back into space (3). As a result, our planet gradually heats up. Deforestation, burning fossil fuels for energy, and industrial processes are among the primary sources of these gases. The consequences of global warming are vast, ranging from rising sea levels to more frequent extreme weather events (4). Fortunately, by making changes in our daily habits and supporting cleaner energy sources (5), we can help reduce the impact of global warming. Task 3: Listen to the passage carefully. After listening, decide if the following statements are true (T) or false (F). TRUE FALSE Question 1: Allen wants to raise awareness among his neighbors by organizing community events or workshops to educate people about carbon footprint. X Question 2: Charles believes installing energy-efficient appliances and improving insulation in homes can make a difference. X Question 3: Rooftop gardens or green roofs not only reduce heat release but also provide a source of fresh produce. X Question 4: Charles believes that green roofs can help with reducing respiratory diseases and improve air quality. X Question 5: Allen has been trying to reduce my multiple-use plastic consumption as well. X Question 6: The two speakers are in Can Tho province. X Allen: Hello, Charles! Have you noticed the increasing temperatures lately? It's concerning how global warming is affecting our city, Cần Thơ. Charles: Yes, Allen, it's quite alarming. We need to take action to reduce its impact on our community. Do you have any ideas on how we can do that?
Allen: Well, one thing we can do is raise awareness among our neighbors. We can organize community events or workshops to educate people about the importance of reducing their carbon footprint. (1) Charles: That's a great idea, Allen. Knowledge is power, and when people understand the issue, they are more likely to take action. I've been thinking about reducing my energy consumption. Installing energy- efficient appliances and improving insulation in our homes can make a difference. (2) Allen: Absolutely, Charles. And speaking of homes, what about promoting rooftop gardens or green roofs in our neighborhood? They not only reduce heat absorption but also provide a source of fresh produce. (3) Charles: That's a brilliant suggestion, Allen. Green roofs can help with temperature regulation and improve air quality. (4) We should also encourage responsible waste management practices in our community to reduce landfill emissions. Allen: Yes, Charles. Recycling and composting can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. I've been trying to reduce my single-use plastic consumption as well (5), especially when I shop at local markets. Charles: That's fantastic! Single-use plastics are a big problem, and we can make a difference by choosing reusable alternatives. I've been exploring ways to support renewable energy sources like solar power for our homes. It's eco-friendly and can save us money in the long run. Allen: That's forward-thinking, Charles. Solar panels can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. And let's not forget about public transportation and promoting cycling. Encouraging these modes of transport can reduce emissions from individual vehicles. Charles: You're absolutely right, Allen. Cần Thơ is a beautiful city, and we should strive to keep it that way for future generations. Let's work together to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly neighborhood. Allen: Agreed, Charles. By taking small steps collectively, we can contribute to a greener and more resilient Cần Thơ. It's not just about us; it's about our children and their children too. (6) B-SPEAKING Talk about human activities that contribute to global warming. “Global warming, in simple terms, refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to human activities. It's a significant concern because of its drastic effects on the climate, leading to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. But what human activities contribute to this phenomenon? Firstly, the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial activities play a major role. Factories release a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases through the burning of fossil fuels. These gases trap heat in the atmosphere, acting like a blanket around the Earth. Then, there's transportation. Cars, airplanes, ships, and trains mostly run on fossil fuels. The emissions from these modes of transport contribute substantially to global warming. Agriculture is another contributor. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is released from rice paddies and cattle. Changes in land use for agriculture, like draining wetlands, also release stored carbon. Deforestation is yet another activity that has a two-fold effect. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, so when they're cut down, not only is this beneficial process reduced, but also the stored carbon in trees is released.
Lastly, our personal habits - from the food we eat, the way we consume energy in our homes, to the waste we produce - all add up. In conclusion, while various human activities contribute to global warming, awareness, and adopting sustainable practices can mitigate these effects. This involves both individual actions and collective efforts, from supporting eleaner energy sources to rethinking our transportation and consumption habits.” C-WRITING Write a parapraph (150-180 words) about the ways to reduce global warming Global warming, attributed largely to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, poses one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Tackling this requires a multifaceted approach. Firstly, the transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, can drastically reduce carbon emissions from electricity generation. Additionally, enhancing public transportation infrastructure and promoting electric vehicles can curtail emissions from the transportation sector. Afforestation, the process of planting trees in deforested areas, not only helps sequester carbon but also restores biodiversity. On an individual level, adopting sustainable lifestyles by reducing waste, supporting sustainable agriculture, and minimizing meat consumption can also make a significant impact. Energy-efficient homes and appliances further decrease the overall carbon footprint. Lastly, international cooperation is vital. Through global partnerships, nations can share best practices, set aggressive emission-reduction targets, and enforce regulations that drive down greenhouse gas emissions. It is through these combined efforts that we can pave the way toward a cooler, more sustainable future for our planet.
