FOOD WASTE America wastes roughly 40 percent of its food. Of the estimated 125 to 160 billion pounds of food that goes to waste every year, much of it is perfectly edible and nutritious. US restaurants generate an estimated 22 to 33 billion pounds of food waste each year. Drivers of food waste at restaurants include oversized portions, inflexibility of chain store management and extensive menu choices. Households are responsible for the largest portion of all food waste. Major contributors to household food waste include: o Food Spoilage: About two-thirds of food waste at home is due to food not being used before it goes bad. o Over-Preparing: The remaining third of household food waste is the result of people cooking or serving too much food. o Overbuying: Sales on unusual products and promotions that encourage impulse and bulk food purchases at retail stores often lead consumers to purchase items that do not fit into their regular meal plans and, therefore, spoil before they can be used. o edible /ˈedəbl/ (adj) = fit or suitable to be eaten: có thể ăn được o oversized portion = the amount served per order is large: khẩu phần ăn quá lớn o inflexibility /ɪnˌfleksəˈbɪləti/ (n) = the fact that something cannot be changed or made more suitable for a particular situation: sự không linh hoạt o to be responsible for ... /rɪˈspɑːnsəbl/ (adj) = being the cause of something: chịu trách nhiệm về ... o due to ... = because of ...: bởi vì o impulse /ˈɪmpʌls/ (n) = a sudden strong wish or need to do something, without stopping to think about the results: sự nóng vội (làm gì đó) (an impulse purchase = an unplanned decision by a consumer to buy a product or service, made just before a purchase: mua hàng mà không tính toán trước) o bulk food purchases: mua hàng số lượng lớn o to purchase something = to buy something: mua ... o to fit into something = to be part of a group or system: phù hợp với ... o a meal plan = a type of plan we create for the type of diet and food so we can buy and plan effectively: kế hoạch ăn uống Source: https://foodprint.org/issues/the-problem-of-food-waste/ SYNONYMS o every year » each year o food that goes to waste » food waste o drivers of food waste » major contributors to food waste o to go bad » to spoil (bị hư, không còn ăn được)
