2 think we have two jobs that might be suitable for you. JOE: OK. SALLY: The first one is in a company based in North London. They’re looking for an administrative assistant. JOE: OK. What sort of company is it? SALLY: They’re called Home Solutions and they design and make furniture. (Q1) JOE: Oh, I don’t know much about that, but it sounds interesting. SALLY: Yes, well as I said, they want someone in their office, and looking at your past experience it does look as if you fit quite a few of the requirements. So on your CV it appears you’ve done some data entry? JOE: Yes. SALLY: So that’s one skill they want. Then they expect the person they appoint to attend meetings (Q2) and take notes there … JOE: OK. I’ve done that before, yes. SALLY: And you’d need to be able to cope with general admin. JOE: Filling, and keeping records and so on? That should be OK. And in my last job I also had to manage the diary. (Q3) SALLY: Excellent. That’s something they want here too. I’d suggest you add it to your CV – I don’t think you mentioned that, did you? JOE: No. SALLY: So as far as the requirements go, they want good computer skills, of course, and they particularly mention spreadsheets. JOE: That should be fine. SALLY: And interpersonal skills – which would be something they’d check with your references. JOE: I think that should be OK, yes. SALLY: Then they mention that they want someone who is careful and takes care with details (Q4) – just looking at your CV, I’d say you’re probably alright there. JOE: I think so, yes. Do they want any special experience? SALLY: I think they wanted some experience of teleconferencing. JOE: I’ve got three years’ experience of that. SALLY: let’s see, yes, good. In fact they’re only asking for at least one year (Q5), so that’s great. So is that something that might interest you? JOE: It is, yes. The only thing is, you said they were in North London so it would be quite a long commute for me. SALLY: OK.
3 Part 2: For questions 6-10, you will hear a conversation between a girl, Kate, and a boy, George. Decide if each sentence is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, put a tick (✓) in the box under A for YES. If it is not correct, put a tick (✓) in the box under B for NO. No Statements A B 6. George thinks Kate should stay away from class. √ 7. Kate had an accident on her bike last week. √ 8. George thinks Mr. Gray is a lazy lecturer. √ 9. Kate will miss three lectures. √ 10. Kate wants to stay at home at the weekend. √ TRANSCRIPT Kate: I don’t remember much of that lecture. The doctor gave me this medicine for my cough, but I don’t like it – it seems to make me awfully sleepy and I can’t follow my lectures. George: Well, if you don’t take it, none of us will be able to follow our lectures – all we’ll hear is you coughing! Kate: Oh dear, do you think I’ll annoy everybody? George: Yes. You could study at home for a couple of days – you know, have some time off until it gets better. Kate: Oh I couldn’t do that! I’d miss too much and I get really uncomfortable when I have a lot of catching up to do. Last year I missed a whole week when I fell off my bike and had that enormous bandage on my hand. It took me ages to do all the work when I came back. George: Oh, you worry to much. You can work at home. Just get Mr Gray to tell you which parts of the coursebook we’ll be covering and read it yourself at home. All he does is go through the book anyway – you might as well do it yourself. Kate: Oh, that’s a bit unfair! I think Mr Gray’s really nice. He’s always willing to stay behind after class if you don’t understand something. George: Being ‘really nice’ and never in a hurry doesn’t make him a good lecturer. Anyway I think you should look after your health first – and ours! If we sit in that small, hot room with you for the next three days, we’ll all have our cough by the end of it. Kate: Mmm, perhaps you’re right. I don’t care about myself, but I wouldn’t like other people to blame me for their illnesses. I have got a bit of a temperature now, too – so maybe I’ll go and see Mr Gray after lunch and tell him I won’t be at this afternoon’s lecture.
4 George: Or the next two … come on, you’ve got to get better. Kate: I suppose you’re right. George: Then we can all go out as we planned at the weekend. Kate: OK then, I don’t want to miss that … and I do feel ill … Part 3: You will hear a woman talking about problems faced by the Grand Canyon National Park Service. Some types of _______ species of fish ______ have now totally disappeared. 20. The Grand Canyon is often said to be one of the _______seven natural wonders______ in the world. TRANSCRIPT Situated in the northwestern part of Arizona, the Grand Canyon is one of the natural wonders of the world. Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon is not the longest, deepest, or widest canyon in the world, but it is accessible and with little vegetation to hide it, it feels big. Nothing prepares you for that first sight of it. From the top, it drops 1.6 kilometers to the desert floor below. But however vast it seems, it is not big enough to support the millions of people who visit it every year. When one section of the Grand Canyon was declared a National Park in 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service, visitor numbers were 44,000. Today with 5 million visitors a year, the Park Service is finding it difficult to keep the canyon accessible to the public and to safeguard it for future generations. The pressures on the Grand Canyon National Park forced the Park Service to draw up a management plan. One of the first problems it tackled was that of the large number of visitors' cars which needed parking space. The Park Service got around the problem by allowing visitors to take advantage of free buses, which take them on a number of routes around the park. Some of the other problems faced by the park are the result of things happening outside its boundaries. Take air pollution. On summer days when there are south-western winds, the pollution blown in from southern
