Chapter 1 The Cultural Relations between India and the Asian countries 1. Introduction: ● India has had a long and profound impact on the cultural development of several Asian countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Asia. ● These cultural exchanges spanned over centuries and involved the spread of religion, art, architecture, language, and philosophy, leading to the development of unique syncretic cultures across Asia. 2. Spread of Indian Religion: A. Buddhism: ● Southeast Asia: Buddhism spread from India to Southeast Asia through traders, scholars, and missionaries. ○ Sri Lanka: Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka by Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka, in the 3rd century B.C. ○ Burma (Myanmar): Theravada Buddhism spread from India to Burma, where it became the dominant religion. ○ Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos: Theravada Buddhism from India profoundly shaped the religious life in these regions. ○ Indonesia: The Srivijaya Empire (7th to 13th centuries) was a major center of Buddhist learning, and the Borobudur Stupa in Java remains a monumental testimony to the Indian influence. ● Central and East Asia: IAS Oriented © 2025 | All Rights Reserved | www.iasoriented.in IAS Oriented
