Spelling test words for Week 7 rhyme meter simile couplet personification haiku metaphor alliteration onomatopoeia sonnet Part 1: pages 2-3 Teachers to read out the definitions from page 2 of the Homework booklet. Below are examples of personification, haiku, a sonnet, alliteration and onomatopoeia.
1. Personification Hey diddle diddle, The cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon, The little dog laughed to see such fun And the dish ran away with the spoon. 2. Haiku It is a Japanese form of poetry that does not rhyme. It has three lines. The first and last lines have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7. 3. Sonnet The poetic form of the sonnet originated in the 13th century in Italy. It was originally intended as a way of expressing romantic love among the upper classes. One of the most famous sonnets is Sonnet 18 by Shakespeare – Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? (He wrote 154 sonnets). Traditional sonnets follow a set of rules. The most common rules are: • a 14 line structure • each 4 lines of verse has the rhyme scheme A-B-A-B, meaning that the first and the third, and the second and the fourth lines rhyme Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? A Thou art more lovely and more temperate. B Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, A And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. B • the sonnet ends with a couplet of two lines with a verse that rhymes. Rhyming scheme A-A So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, A So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. A
My Teacher Said to Write a Sonnet Now My teacher said to write a sonnet now. She told me, “It should be a work of art.” I’d like to but I’m really not sure how. I wish someone would show me where to start. I heard the rhymes should be ABAB, which means I can’t rhyme every single word. The second and the fourth lines rhyme, you see. And you should rhyme the first line with the third. The first three stanzas all have four lines each. The final couplet? That has only two. A sonnet’s not an easy thing to teach. I guess that’s what this poem aims to do. It seems that starting was the hardest part. I hope the teacher likes my work of art. 4. Alliteration The repetition of the initial consonant sounds of several words in a phrase Tongue twisters are wonderful examples of alliteration and a lot of fun for students! Activity: a) The teacher gives students a handout or projects some of the tongue twisters onto the whiteboard/tv screen b) The teacher reads out the first tongue twister and then all the students practise out loud. c) A few volunteers say the tongue twister. d) The process is repeated for each of the tongue twisters.
