Can I help you? MAN: Oh yes. I spoke to you an hour ago about the arrangements for our end-up term party. WOMAN: Oh, that's right. It's Mr Saunders, isn't it? MAN: Actually, it's Sanders. That's S-A-N-D-E-R-S. WOMAN: Oh, I'm sorry. I'll just get that down correctly on the form. Okay, Mr Sanders. Sorry about that. MAN: No problem. Well, I've got the details you asked for. So I thought I should call you back quickly and book. WOMAN: Good. Let's fill in the form, shall we? MAN: Great. WOMAN: First of all, can you give me a telephone number? Somewhere where you can be contacted during the day.
2 MAN: Yes, it's 445-6786. WOMAN: Double 45-6786. Okay. And do you have a number where you can be contacted outside of office hours? MAN: Well, I'm at work till late in the evening. So use the same number. And if I'm not there, you can leave a message. WOMAN: Thanks. I'll make a note of that. And how many guests shall I put down? MAN: Okay, that's changed. So instead of the figure I gave you before of 85, it's now only 50. It's much lower, I'm afraid, because a lot of people can't make that date. WOMAN: That's not a problem. Can you remind me of the date we'd said? MAN: Yes, it's the 25th of June. WOMAN: Okay, that's fine. ---------- WOMAN: Now, did you have the chance to look at the tables on the website? MAN: Yes, I did. And I think the rectangular tables would be good. The long thing ones. WOMAN: Yes, you can have two of those. The only problem is that therefore 24 people. So, you'd only seat 48 people that way. And if you have 50 guests. MAN: Oh, I see what you mean. Two people have nowhere to sit. What about the square ones? WOMAN: You'd have the same problem with numbers. Usually, for 50 people, we find the round tables work well. Not the smaller ones. They only seat 6 people. There was the seat 10. The large ones. MAN: So, do you think we should have five of those? WOMAN: I think that would work well. MAN: Okay, that's what we'll do then. Choose the suitable answer 9. The man decided to book ______________. A. a three-course meal B. a buffet C. a banquet 10. The man will have to pay ______________. A. 750 pound tomorrow B.1000 pound per head C.1500 pound on the day of party TRANSCRIPT WOMAN: Fine. And have you decided on the menu you'd like? MAN: Yes, I think so. But I wanted to ask you, we talked about having the three-course meal with waiter service. But in the end, we thought it would be a bit too formal. WOMAN: So, that leaves the buffet or the seven-course banquet. MAN: How much is a banquet again?
3 WOMAN: A hundred pounds ahead. MAN: That's too much and too formal. The buffet is fine. WOMAN: Okay, so I think I've got everything. We'd need a deposit of 50% of the total. MAN: Right. What's the total? WOMAN: Just a minute. Yes, it's 30 pounds ahead. Times 50. So, that's 1,500 pounds. 50% of that would be 750 now, with a balanced due, another 750 on the day. MAN: Great. I'll call in tomorrow if that's okay. I can pay you the deposit then. WOMAN: We'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow then. MAN: Okay. Thanks a lot. Goodbye. WOMAN: Goodbye. Section 2. Why does John want to spend more time near home? A. His wife misses him. B. He has very young children. C. His family might need him. TRANSCRIPT Man: People always ask me why I only travel the hard way! A lot of television travel programmes are about relaxing holidays on the beach, but I’ve only ever made documentaries about really long trips. The last trip I did was a 50,000-mile journey around the Pacific Ocean, and it took 12 months. But then my very first trip was a ‘round the world’ journey, and the most difficult one was probably a car journey from the North Pole to the South Pole! As you can imagine, I’ve seen a lot of the world! I’m lucky to be in really excellent health, but life is very
4 short and I’ve done so much travelling that I want a change. Travelling long distances makes you extremely tired, and although it’s still a great pleasure for me, I want to so something more relaxing now. I think my next television series might be made nearer England. There’s some really interesting work going on in Wales, where they’ve just found what remains of a 2,000-year-old town. Or I might do something about farms in France, or even cycling in Holland. There’s always something to film if you look hard enough! But I hope the programmes I’ve made about the really long trips will encourage other people to get on a plane and have some adventures. Some people seem to be afraid of going to a strange country and perhaps being ill there, but maybe they realise now that if I can do these trips, so can they. I’m only a very ordinary person. And obviously, you don’t have to travel on your own as I always have. I must say that until recently I hadn’t ever worried about being so far from home even when the children were very small. But while I was filming in Borneo last year my wife had to have an emergency operation, and it really frightened me because I couldn’t get back to England. Everything was fine in the end – but I wouldn’t want to be so far away if anything like that happened to my family again. Perhaps if I spend more time at home I can do more writing. I’ve done two books so far. I write about places I’ve seen and my feelings about them. I don’t think I’ll ever write fiction or poetry, but I’d be interested in writing newspaper articles. My family says I’m very difficult to live with when I’m writing at home ... perhaps that’s why they’ve never complained about me travelling! PART B. LEXICO-GRAMMAR Section 1.
