CHỦ ĐỀ 18 – CÂU ĐIỀU KIỆN A. LÝ THUVẾT Câu điều kiện dùng để nêu lên một giả thiết về một sự việc, mà sự việc đó chỉ có thể xảy ra khi điều kiện được nói đến xảy ra. Câu điều kiện gồm có hai mệnh đề. Mệnh đề nêu lên điều kiện (còn gọi là mệnh đề IF) là mệnh đề phụ hay mệnh đề điều kiện. Mệnh đề nêu lên kết quả là mệnh đề chính. STUDY TIP Hai mệnh đề trong câu điều kiện có thể đổi chổ cho nhau được: nếu mệnh đề chính đứng trước thì giữa hai mệnh đề không cần dấu phẩy, ngược lại thì phải có dấu phẩy ở giữa I. CÂU ĐIỀU KIỆN LOẠI I Câu điều kiện Cách dùng 1. If+ S + V(hiện tại), S + will/ shall/ can + V If she gets up late, she will miss the bus. If you are finding the route, the computer will help you. If Sue has finished the job, she can have a rest. Diễn tả một điều kiện có thật hoặc có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại, tương lai. 2. If + S + V(hiện tại),V+ (O...) If you meet him, tell him to write to me. 3. If + S + V(hiện tại), I don’t + V + (O...) Don’t go outside if the wind is strong. Dùng để đưa ra lời chỉ dẫn, yêu cầu hoặc mệnh lệnh. 4. If + S + should + V, S + will/shall/ can + V If it should rain tonight, I will stay at home. 5. If + S + Should + V, V + (O)/ don’t + V + (O...) If Mary should see you, give her my best regards. If she should come here, don’t tell her my address. Diễn tả một khả năng ít xảy ra. 6. Should + S + V,... Should it rain tonight, I will stay at home. Should Mary see you, give her my best regards. Should she come here, don’t tell her my address. 7. Should + S + be + V-ing,... Should you be finding the route, the computer will help you. 8. Should + S + have + PPII,... Câu điều kiện Cách dùng 1. If + S+ V(quá khứ bàng thái), S + would/ could/ mighl + V - If I knew his address, I would give it to you. - If he were staying by the sea, he would take lots of photos. Diễn tả điều kiện không có thật hoặc tưởng tượng ở hiện tại, tương lai. 2. If + S + were + N/ Adj/to V..., S + would/could/might + V - If I were your brother, I would go abroard. - She wouldn’t get bad marks if she were studious. were dùng ở tất cả các ngôi. 3. Were + S + N/ Adj/ to V..., S + would/ could/ might + V - Were I your brother, I would go abroard. - Were I to know his address, I would give it to you. 4. If it weren’t for sb/sth, S+ would/ could/ might + V = Were it not for sb/ sth, S + would/ could/ might + V (Nếu không nhờ, nếu không vì) - If It weren’t for your help, I wouldn’t speak English well. = Were it not for your help, I wouldn’t speak English well. If it hadn’t been for sb/sth, S + would/could/might + have + PPII = Had it not been for Sb/ Sth, S + would/could/might + have + PPII = But for Sb/Sth, S + would/could/might + have + PPII (Nếu không nhờ, nếu không vì) - If it hadn’t been for a failure, we would have been rich. = Had it not been for a failure, we would have been rich. Câu điều kiện Cách dùng 1. If + S + V(hiện tại đơn), S + V(hiện tạl đơn) - If you heat water, it bollS. Dùng để nêu sự thật, chân lí 2. If + S + had + PPII, S + would/ could/ might + V - If I hadn’t stayed up late last night, I wouldn’t be so tired now. - You wouldn’t be so hungry if you had had breakfast this morning. Kết hợp câu điêu kiện loại 3 và loại 2 3. Had + S (not) + PPII, S + would/ could/ might + V - Had I not stayed up late last night, I wouldn’t be so tired now. Đảo ngữ 4. If + S + V(quá khứ), S + would/ could/ might + have + PPII - If he were more organized, he wouldn't have caused the mess. - If I had time, I would have helped you. Kết hợp câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3 V. In case (Phòng khi) I always take an umbrella in case it rains. STUDY TIP: Mệnh đề sau in case thường dùng thì hiện tại đơn hoặc quá khứ đơn. With + N,... (Với) - If you help me, I can finish this assignment. = With your help, I can finish this assignment. Without + N (Nếu không có) - Without water, life wouldn't exist. = If there were no water, life wouldn’t exist. - I wouldn't have been successful without his help. = If he hadn't helped me, I wouldn’t have been successful. As long as/ So long as/ Provided (that)/ Providing (that)/ On condition that + S + V,... (Miễn là/ với điều kiện - dùng để thay thế cho"If” trong mệnh đề phụ) - As long as you drive carefully, you can use my car. = If you drive carefully, you can use my car. - She will help you on condition that you are kind to her. Otherwise = Or else (Nếu không thì) You must read the instruction; otherwise, you don't know how to do it. We must be back before midnight, or else I will be locked out. STUDY TIP: Otherwise được dùng để thay thế cho mệnh đề “if” và liến quan đến ý của câu trướC.
