Year 3 English – 3008b Term 1 Week 9 Last Lesson for Term 1 Happy Easter Term 1 ends Sat 29/3 Sun 30/3 Online 1/4/2025 Term 2 begins Sat 26/4 Sun 27/4 Online 29/4/2025 Remind students to use the spelling list and reading list/record available from the Yr. 3 Google Drive, which can be accessed via https://exams.institute/ Students are asked whether there were any difficult or tricky questions from the last homework practice 3007b and the textbook. Complicated questions will be discussed. Part 1: Spelling Words Spelling test to be completed using last Term’s words. Week 8’s spelling test is the following words. 20 new spelling words have been selected from the Reading Comprehension for students to learn. (Provided on page 2 of the homework sheet.) Students will be tested on 10 words for Term 1 Week 2’s test. Hunting for a Poem 1. Again, students are selected to read through the poem with the class. 2. Complicated words or phrases are discussed by asking students if they know the word’s meanings. E.g., “What do you think ‘astound’ mean?” Students are asked to write down notes and jot down unfamiliar word meanings. They are encouraged to use a dictionary for any other words they are not sure about. Words that might need further explaining: Similes Comparing two things using the words “like” or “as”. Astound To surprise or shock someone very much. 3. Students are to complete the five (5) multiple-choice questions after class. Part 4: Grammar: Similes 1. Teachers will explain what similes are. A simile is a way of describing something by comparing it to something else using 'like' or 'as', usually in an interesting or imaginative way. 2. Students may like to watch this short video on similes at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm6zt24w0qU&t=68s (stop the video after 1.58 minutes) 3. Examples of similes will be discussed. Additional examples: As hungry as a bear. We’re like two peas in a pod. As hard as a rock. As playful as a kitten. As sparkly as a diamond. As cool as a cucumber. 4. Students are asked if they can think of a simile. 5. Teachers to complete the first question with the class as an example. 1. As flat as a pancake. 6. Students are to complete the remaining six (6) questions on similes after class. Textbook Please note: It is very important that students DO NOT go ahead of the class and complete additional pages. These pages are to be completed during class (with any unfinished work to be completed for homework). Students have the opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance from the teacher. Year 4 Vocabulary Skills Complete any pages not completed to page 16.
