Homework Practice 5011b Part 1 – Vocabulary • Review the vocabulary list and discuss word meanings. • Challenge: Students to write a sentence using as many words from the list as possible. • Complete several questions as a class.
Making connections: What is historical fiction? Historical fiction takes place in the past. It includes real historical events or details, but also made-up characters and storylines. astride With a leg on each side of something. crooned to sing or talk in a sweet, low voice full of emotion. oozing To flow slowly out of something through a small opening, or to slowly produce a thick sticky liquid. sentimentality Expression of gentle emotions such as love, sympathy, or caring. In this case, soft- sounding sentimental words are paired with evil intent (wanting to cause harm). sod off Telling someone to ‘go away’. squelchy Usually refers to a sucking sound like the one produced when walking on soft wet ground; however, in this case it refers to a physical feeling accompanying an emotion. swine A person who you consider to be extremely unpleasant and unkind. thrust To push suddenly and strongly. vigorous Very forceful or energetic. wrenched To pull and twist something suddenly or violently away from its position. Part 3 – Vocabulary: Discuss word meanings and complete several examples. If time permits, students can be nominated to look up words in their dictionaries. roused rouse: to wake someone up or make someone more active or excited. wistfully In a way that is sad and shows someone is thinking about something that is impossible or in the past. lonesome lonely exquisitely In a very beautiful and delicate way.
