1 Self-Introduction Aakash Kaif (India) Photo of yourself ● Vasant Valley School (April 2017 – March 2020) ● Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Department of Agricultural Engineering Faculty (April 2020 - March 2024) ● Tohoku University Graduate School of Agricultural Science Faculty (April 2024 – March 2026 (expected to graduate)) Bio I am concerned about poverty issues faced by Indian farmers. A farmer I have known since childhood had their tomato crops wiped out last year. Farming for generations this broke their spirits. Many other farmers are suffering in their daily lives due to problems like climate change, which are beyond their control. In 2015, more than 8,000 farmers in India committed suicide due to economic reasons. As someone researching agricultural technology at Tohoku University, I wonder if there is something I can do to help. 2 I’D LIKE TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF POVERTY AMONGST SMALL-SCALE FARMERS IN INDIA 1. What social issue to address Problem(results of desktop research) 20 million small farmers in India are living in poverty ● Bihar, where farmers make up 86% of the population, is one of Indias‘ poorest regions ● In addition to its existing poverty, Bihar experienced severe droughts for two consecutive years starting in 2007 – Leaving the region unable to cultivate any crops for half a year According to a survey conducted by the Indian government 75% of farmers considered leaving farming, and 90% stated that they do not want their children to pursue agriculture ● The impact of disasters is particularly severe on small-scale farmers This region is directly affected by global climate change ● This issue is not limited to India but is also affects global food security – Approximately 80% of the world's food is produced by small- scale farmers Source: Indian Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan”” Photo of the site/issue
3 I INTERVIEWED FARMER MR.KUMAR AND CONCLUDED THAT PROVIDING RESOURCES & EXPERTISE IS ESSENTIAL FOR ADDING VALUE TO CROPS 2. Problem hypotheses Interviewee Overview Farmer Mr. Kumar ● 45yo/Male ● A small scale farmer in Bihar – Cultivating veg on 3 acres of land for 10 years – Mainly produces tomatoes ● Drought wiped out his tomato crop preventing any shipping – Currently struggling to buy food for tomorrow Result of the research The area surrounding Mr. Kumar's land faces many environmental risks ● Visiting the site revealed challenges shared by the neighboring farmers It was evident that he uses very old equipment and materials ● High-quality equipment and materials are expensive, making new purchases unaffordable Observation ● Problem A: Lack of equipment and materials needed for stable cultivation on high-risk land ● Problem B: Insufficient know-how for producing high-quality crops that can be sold at high prices ● Problem C: Lack of upfront capital to purchase necessary equipment and materials Findings “Droughts occur once every three years, and I am always worried” ● Although purchasing equipment for drought countermeasures might help, the high costs make it unaffordable “There are inconsistencies in fruit development during harvest, and only small-sized crops can be grown” ● Crops are bought at low prices, resulting in constantly low income and a hand-to-mouth existence Info gained from Intv.
