Page 2 Using Fractions Question 1a A fraction of part of a whole: To solve this question, calculate what 1 /3 of 120 is (120÷3) and then multiply the answer by 2 as we are finding 2 /3 of 120. Find 5% of each number. An easy strategy to use when solving this question is that we can calculate 10% of the number and then half the number again, for example, 1/10 of 60=6. Halve the number again and it equals 3.
3 In the first row we need to find 3 /5 of the whole quantity. Remember how we, find 1/5 divide by 5 and then multiply your answer by 3. Let’s look at the example of finding 3 /5 of 1.20. Convert 1.20 to cents which becomes 120cents. Then we find 1/5 of 120. This equals 24. Multiply 24x3 and this equals 72cents. Extra Practice
