PHARMD GURU Page 1 ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE-STAFF, INFRASTRUCTURE & WORK LOAD STATISTICS DEFINITION: The practice of pharmacy within the hospital under the supervision of a professional pharmacist is known as hospital pharmacy. FUNCTIONS OF HOSPITAL PHARMACY: Forecast of demand. Selection of reliable suppliers. Prescribing specifications of the required medicament. Manufacturing of sterile or non-sterile preparations. Maintenance of manufacturing records. Quality control of purchased or manufactured products. Distribution of medicaments in the wards. Dispensing of medicaments to out-patients. Drug information source in hospitals. Centre for drug utilization studies. Implement recommendations of the pharmacy and therapeutic committee. Patient counseling. Maintaining liaison between medical, nursing and the patient. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - STAFF Depending upon the nature and size of hospitals, the organization set up will differ but main department namely the clinical services will be common in all & all other functions like nursing, pharmacy, housekeeping & administrator will support the number of administrator personal depends upon the size of the hospital. PHARMD GURU Page 2 ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF: THE HOSPITAL IS GENERAL: Managed by board of trustees or the governing council Appointed by government or corporation Delegate the active management of hospital to the administrator along with his staff or associates, supervisors and department heads Enforce must policy framed governing council Administrator act as liaison between medical staff & board of trustees or governing body. MEDICAL STAFF: Responsible for all medical care to be provided to the patients. Backbone of hospital. It plays important role to restore & maintain good health of patients. It classified in to: o Active medical staff or residential medical staff. o Associate medical staff. o Consulting medical staff. o Honorary medical staff. RESIDENTIAL MEDICAL STAFF: Available on 24hrs service basis. Available round the clock to attend the patients. Also involved in organizational and administrative duties. ASSOCIATE MEDICAL STAFF: Appointed & assigned to the various services in the same manner members of active medical staff. Being considered for advancement to residential medical staff.
PHARMD GURU Page 3 CONSULTING MEDICAL STAFF: Practioner expert in specific area of medicines. Come to hospitals on specific days, time and are available for consultation by patients. HONONARY MEDICAL STAFF: Part time consulting medical staff May be retired or emeritus physicians Have their own clinic but offer their honorary services to the hospital. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - INFRASTRUCTURE 1. Located in the ground floor or in the first floor. 2. Sufficient space for seating of patients. 3. Waiting room for out-patients. It should contain educative posters on health, hygiene and offer literature for reading. 4. Suitable space – routine manufacturing of bulk preparations (stock solutions, bulk powders and ointments etc. 5. Office of the chief. 6. Packaging and labeling area. 7. Cold storage area. 8. Research wing. 9. Pharmacy store room. 10.Library. 11.Radio isotope storage and dispensing area
PHARMD GURU Page 4 ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - WORK LOAD STATISTICS DEFINITION: It is the function that is performed by the pharmacy staff in an assigned area. Monthly, the workload per section is collected for inclusion into a departmental report. PURPOSE: To describe the method for obtaining and analysing workload statistics for pharmacy department to be utilised in departmental staffing and work distribution plan. Head of pharmacy is responsible for approving the statistics and sending to the hospital administration. POLICY: Determining the standard time for every activity in the pharmacy department. All activities involved in drug distribution are identified and collected in workload date reporting sheets Computers may be obtained from the pharmacy computer system. The final monthly report will be compiled and submitted to the head of pharmacy services. The total workload of session is collected to be included into one department report; this report will be submitted to hospital administration.
