The main issue today is global warming. (19)________ of greenhouse gases, which keep the heat from the sun in the air. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of (20)________ greenhouse gases. It's mostly caused by burning fossil fuels. We consume fossil fuels for our transportation and the energy in our homes. Deforestation is (21)_________ that only makes global warming worse. Trees remove greenhouse gases from the air, so we need to protect the forests. What can we do? First of all, (22)___________, we should shut down coal and of power plants. We should switch to more sustainable kinds of energy, such as wind and solar power, even if they cost more. Instead of gas, we could switch to using biofuels, which are made from plants and other living things. Secondly, we should prohibit cars and motorbikes from downtown areas and increase the tax on gas to make it more expensive to use them. (23)__________, especially electric buses, is another good idea. Adapted from i-Learn Smart World Question 18: A. More and more teenagers are worrying about

Global warming and deforestation are destroying our valuable ecosystems and harming the animals and plants (24)________ live in them. There are many things we can do to stop these problems and protect the Earth's ecosystems. Firstly, we must try to use only (25)_________ products. For example, we should use electric cars and everyday products like refrigerators and televisions that are energy- saving. These products don't use (26)_________ electricity that produces greenhouse gases. In this way, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions that harm ecosystems. Another way to protect our ecosystems is to plant trees. The more trees we have, the more we can (27)__________ the CO2 already in the air. By doing this, we reduce global warming and its harmful (28)_________ on the environment. Adapted from Bright Question 24: A. whose B. that C. who D. whom Question 25: A. energy-saving B. well-preserved C. eye-opening D. high-rise Question 26: A. a lot of B. many C. some D. each Question 27: A. face up to B. get on with C. put up with D. cut down on Question 28: A. affects B. effects C. effective D. effectively Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 29 to 33. From melting arctic ice caps to forest fires, global warming is heating up the planet and damaging the Earth's ecosystems. Global warming is the rise of the Earth's temperatures caused by an increase of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. Global warming has increased very much in the past 100 years because people are using more and more electricity and driving more cars. We are also cutting down more trees that clean the air. Scientists have been studying the effects of global warming on different ecosystems for a long time and what they have found is quite worrying. The rising temperatures have caused many problems in ecosystems. Arctic ice is melting, causing sea levels to rise and floods in seaside areas. As a result, animals and plants are losing their homes. As oceans and rivers become warmer, the water temperatures keep changing. Some marine animals cannot live in these new conditions. Since the 1970s, populations of fish in lakes and rivers have decreased by 76 percent.
Global warming is also causing extreme weather events. Other ecosystems, like deserts and grasslands, are experiencing terrible droughts and certain wildlife and plant species that depend on water are dying. Due to the high temperatures, wildfires are destroying whole ecosystems such as forests. There has been a serious rise in endangered species in recent years that could result in many animals becoming extinct. The loss of plants and animals causes problems for all living things in an ecosystem. We need to take action to stop global warming and save the Earth's ecosystems before it's too late. Adapted from Bright Question 29: What is the passage mainly about? A. The benefits and impacts of climate change B. The causes and effects of global warming C. The importance of reducing wildfires D. The role of CO2 emissions in pollution Question 30: The word "losing" in the passage is closest in meaning to ________. A. finding B. lacking C. gaining D. missing Question 31: According to the passage, what has led to the increase in global warming? A. CO2 emissions B. Reduced waste C. Marine pollution D. Air humidity Question 32: The word "they" in the passage refers to ______. A. scientists B. effects C. ecosystems D. temperatures Question 33: Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Global warming affects both marine and land life. B. Fish populations in lakes and rivers have decreased. C. Wildfires are decreasing due to climate change. D. Deserts are experiencing terrible droughts. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40. When Google Earth was set up in 2005, satellite technology changed forever the way we see the world and we all became global tourists. Now anybody can 'visit' anywhere on Earth- places you never imagined visiting, such as Antarctica and the Sahara Desert. All you need for your virtual world trip is a computer and an Internet connection. But Google Earth is not just a fun way to explore the world. It can also inform people about environmental issues such as deforestation, endangered species and climate change. When Google Earth first appeared, nobody could have imagined that an Amazonian tribe would use this tool to help them protect their environment and their culture. The Surui tribe live in the middle of the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. They had not had any contact with the outside world until 1969. Then illegal loggers started to invade their land and destroy the forest. Without the forest, the Surui community would not survive and they knew they had to take action. So they elected Chief Almir as one of the leaders of the tribe. Chief Almir first came across Google Earth on a visit to an Internet café. He immediately realised that he could use the interactive maps to tell people about the illegal logging that was destroying his people's environment. The tribal chief wanted to show the effects of deforestation, not only on his local community, but on a global scale too. He understood that deforestation was destroying plants and wildlife and causing global warming. He contacted Google and then travelled from the Amazon rainforest to Google headquarters in California and told them his story. They discussed ways of working together.
