Remind students that it cannot be marked if they did not submit their work today. In order to get the most out of the writing programme, students should always hand in their work on time. Today’s Fun Fact A bolt of lightning is 5 times hotter than the sun.
Focus 1: Quick Writes The QW activities are set up to tie in with the topic. It is a brainstorming and discussion aspect of the class. Set a timer for 40 seconds (recommended) or choose a time you wish to spend on each Quick Write activity. Time should not exceed 2 minutes per topic. Ask students to write as much as they can about the topics. Today’s Quick Writes  Describe someone brave and explain why you admire them.  What is the scariest or most shocking thing you have ever seen?  Describe this picture using your five senses. Focus 2: Vocabulary and Word Work Go through the list of stores in the box and discuss what each store is used for. Boutique - a small shop selling fashionable clothes or accessories. Fishmonger – a shop that sells fish. Grocer - a shop who sells food and small household goods. Greengrocer – a shop who sells fruit and vegetables. Sequencing Events: Choose students to read the story aloud. Ask students to find the first event, the rest they can fill out in their own time.
Focus 3: This Week’s Topic “It was the moment they had been dreading for decades: the volcano had finally erupted. The earth shook, as torrents of golden death cascaded over the helpless landscape. Clouds of ash swarmed over the countryside, enveloping everything in their path. Chaos reigned as the beast that had been sleeping for years, now awoken, smote his fury upon the world. In the distance, a flash of silvery lightning licked across the sky: a snake’s forked tongue lashing out in fury to strike its prey. The world was on fire. It was nature’s turn to take its revenge.” *Ask students to take note of any interesting vocabulary/phrases as you read this story* What do you think it means by ‘nature taking its revenge’? Discuss. Discussion About Volcanoes: Do you know what causes a volcano to erupt? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZ_CMuBJVI8 Do you know of any active volcanoes in the world? -show images of some famous volcanoes Narrative Refresh: Narrative writing is storytelling. Your writing should have a clear beginning, middle and end as well as include characters, setting, problem/conflict and solution. For this Assignment: Aim to write 5 paragraphs Create a plan Include a creative title This Week’s Plan Setting: Characters: Conflict: Solution: Include the 4 words – mountain, ash, eruption and explosion
Focus 4: Run on Sentences This is an area most students need to improve on. A run-on sentence contains two or more independent clauses that aren’t properly separated and/or punctuated. The reason you should avoid run-on sentences is they can make ideas less clear and even confusing to readers. Reading run-on sentences is like continuously swimming ten laps in an Olympic-sized pool — you run out of breath. Easily fix a run-on sentence by making two separate sentences. Run on sentence example Today was the best day in the whole world my family began our beach vacation it took a long time to get to the beach my sister and I were thrilled to see the beautiful blue skies and giant ocean waves. The text needs to be broken down into even shorter sentences to make perfect sense. Example: Today was the best day in the whole world my family began our beach vacation. Correction: Today was the best day in the whole world. My family began our beach vacation. Example: It took a long time to get to the beach my sister and I were thrilled to see the blue skies and giant waves Correction: It took a long time to get to the beach. My sister and I were thrilled to see the blue skies and giant waves. Homework Reminders: Homework books: “Excel Basic Skills” - Pages 63 and 64 Unit 10 Writing homework is to be handed to your writing teacher on the day of class. You will always have one week to complete your writing task. Late homework will not be marked as per the New Century School homework policy.
