1 INTRODUCTION Nurses play an important role in promptly detecting and managing pain for patients because most of the time patients are in the hospital, they have direct contact with nurses [17], [29], [57]. In fact, many studies have shown that nurses' knowledge and practice of pain management is one of the worrying issues. Al- Zghoul, (2016) pointed out that nurses performing pain assessment, pain relief intervention, and post-intervention reassessment for patients only achieved an average level [10]. Or in the Wuni & CS (2020) study, 42.2% of nurses showed poor pain management practices [125]. In Vietnam, in research by authors Vu, Tran, Le & CS. (2020) pointed out that most nurses only perform pain assessment and pain relief interventions when reported by patients[116]. In addition, many studies have shown that over 70% of nurses participating in research do not have adequate knowledge about pain management [22], [84], [99]. According to author Lewin's theory of social science (1951), factors affecting each individual's behavior include personal factors and environmental factors [63]. From the literature review, the most commonly reported factors affecting nurses' implementation of pain management for patients include nurses' lack of knowledge (individual factors), lack of guidance, and standardized procedures for pain management, lack of participation in pain training courses, lack of nursing support specialists (environmental factors) [63], [75], [92]. Many studies have demonstrated that providing an educational course effectively promotes better nursing knowledge and practice [34], [44], [48]. However, most of these studies only intervene on
2 one individual factor that affects behavior, that is, providing an educational course to improve nurses' knowledge without paying attention to other factors concerning environment. Hai Duong General Hospital is a centre for carrying out health care, education and nursing training for many universities and medical facilities. Thus, unifying the pain management process for patients by nurses is urgent, not only meaningful in improving the quality of care but also meaningful in training and scientific research. Therefore, the study was conducted at Hai Duong General Hospital with 2 research objectives to: 1. Describe the current status of knowledge and practice regarding to pain management of nurses at Hai Duong Provincial General Hospital in 2022 and some related factors. 2. Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention to improve knowledge and practice regarding to pain management of nurses at Hai Duong Provincial General Hospital in 2022 Main contributions of the thesis - Assessed the current status of knowledge and practice of pain management of nurses working at Hai Duong General Hospital and some related factors. - Built an intervention model to improve knowledge and practice of pain management for nurses based on theory, literature review and initial survey results including training programs, manuals for pain management, and a expert group to support nurses in pain management. A detail, and scientific plan with multi-strategic solutions suitable for the research subject - Proved the intervention model in improveing the knowledge and practice in pain management for nurses.
