Endocrine-05 Adrenocortical hormones: name, functions, mechanism of action, regulation of secretion & disorders ( Addition’s disease, Cushing’s Syndrome, Conn’s disease).
Adrenal gland: Inner medulla: epinephrine & norepinephrine. Outer cortex: It has three layers- i) Zona glomerulosa: -outer thiner layer -constitute 15% of adrenal cortex -it secretes mineralocorticoids.e.g. aldosterone ii) Zona fasciculata: -middle layer, consist of 75% of adrenal cortex -secretes glucocorticoid, e.g. cortisol, corticosterone, as well as small amounts of adrenal androgen & estrogen.
iii) Zona reticularis: -it is the inner deep layer -it secretes adrenal androgen and small amount of estrogen. Mineralocorticoids: are so called because they effect the electrolytes of the ECF specially Na+ & K+ . Natural: a) Aldosterone (90%), b) Deoxycorticosterone, c) Corticosterone d) Cortisol. Synthetic: a) 9-a Flurocortisol b) Cortisone Glucocorticoids: Are so called because they exhibit important role that increases blood glucose concentration. Natural: a) Cortisol, b) Corticosterone
