6/24/25 1 BASICS OF EXPERIMENTATION Confounding vs Extraneous Variables Control Variables 1 THE PEPSI CHALLENGE 2
6/24/25 4 How would one solve the issue of confounds and extraneous variables in a study ? 7 Morning - 10 am THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD How to avoid extraneous and confounding variables Hypothesis: Participants who get paid more to perform well will score higher on a math test than those who are paid less Paid $10 to perform well Paid $5 to perform well Paid no money 19 Is there a problem? Is the researcher SURE that ONLY the IV caused the DV? Perhaps performance on the math test varies as a function of the time of day (morning, afternoon, or evening); maybe those who participate later in the experiment are more fatigued than those who did the study earlier in the day. Morning - 10 am Afternoon - 3 pm Evening - 9 pm How can a researcher introduce control by ”holding things constant “ to deal with this confound Average Scores 15 7 What if the researcher was told that the lab could only contain 30 participants at a time and was available only at 10 am, 3pm and 9pm....is there some way for the researcher to ensure that the feelings of fatigue experienced later in the day is not just experienced by one group? Thirty Ps were assigned to each condition. 8
