PETROLEUM REFINING Compiled by EMMCM 2021
INTRODUCTION A plastic alarm clock rings, telling you that it is time to get up. You rise from a mattress of synthetic foam rubber, and you put on your clothes made of nylon and other synthetic fibers. In the kitchen, you walk on plastic tiles. You pick up a container of milk that is coated with wax and open a package of oranges wrapped in plastic film. After breakfast, you ride to school on a bicycle with synthetic rubber tires or in a vehicle powered by gasoline. It is still early, but already petroleum has played a big part in your day
WHAT IS PETROLEUM? • One of the most valuable natural resources in the world. • Crude oil or crude ( “crude oil – unrefined petroleum ) • A flammable liquid found in the underground deposits. • Best known for its use as “fuel” and as a raw material for chemical products. • “petra” – rock, “oleum” – oil • People have burned oil for a long time. Long ago, they didn’t dig for it. They gathered oil that bubbled to the surface or seeped from under the ground into wells. It floated on the water.
WHAT IS PETROLEUM? • Petroleum is a FOSSIL FUEL. • It was made from the remains of plants and animals. The energy in petroleum came from the energy in the plants and animals. That energy came actually from the sun.
