Initially, when the rectifier output voltage is increasing, the capacitor is getting charged. At the end of the quarter cycle, the capacitor voltage becomes equal to the maximum value of rectifier output voltage, and after that as the rectifier voltage start decreasing, the capacitor starts discharging and provide current to the load till it start charging again. Due to the discharging, there is a slight decrease in the capacitor voltage but in the next half cycle as the rectifier voltage increases, the capacitor again starts charging and hence, the voltage across the load is almost constant.
