DAY 16: STATICS 1 LECTURE OUTLINE • Force Vectors • Parallelogram Law • Components and Resultant of Force Vectors (2D) • Components and Resultant of Force Vectors (3D) • Moment and Couple • Moment of a Force • Resultant of Moments • Varignon’s Theorem • Moment of a Couple • Equivalent Systems of Forces and Systems • Moments as Vectors • Distributed Loads • Equivalent Resultant Force • Location of Resultant Force Like every force, your effort has direction—aim it straight at your license.
DAY 16: STATICS 1 FORCE VECTORS Like every force, your effort has direction—aim it straight at your license. Scalar. A scalar is any positive or negative physical quantity that can be completely specified by its magnitude. • length, mass, and time. Vector. A vector is any physical quantity that requires both a magnitude and a direction for its complete description. • force, position, and moment A Line of Action Magnitude Sense θ Direction
DAY 16: STATICS 1 FORCE VECTORS Like every force, your effort has direction—aim it straight at your license. 1. Parallelogram Law A When a particle experiences two forces, the resultant force can be found using the parallelogram law. The parallelogram law is done by drawing a line from the “head” of a force vector parallel to the other force. This is done for both forces. The resultant force is acquired by connecting the intersection of the “tails” of the forces with the intersection of the drawn lines. B + = A B
