You could use this method if the numbers are straight forward and do not involve trading or carrying over, and the ALL the bigger numbers on top! Let’s try another set of easy numbers: Always start from the Ones Place 985 – 651 900 80 5 - 600 50 1 But what happens when you get a smaller number on top in the Ones place? Then it involves trading or re-grouping. This is how trading works. We need to regroup, meaning we need to take 3 tens and split it into 2 tens and 1 ten, so that the 2 ones become 12 ones. • 2 tens becomes 12 ones, and it is now possible to take 5ones away from 12 ones. 12 -5 =7 • We only have 2 tens left in the Tens Place as we have already given away 1 ten away to 2 ones just now. Now 2 tens take away 1 ten = 1 ten = 10 We use this method whenever a column has a small number on top. Let’s do another question: 4428 – 1165 Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones 4 4 2 8 1 1 6 5 - Let’s do an easier one: 591 - 385 Hundreds Tens Ones 5 9 1 3 8 5 - What happens if you get a set of numbers like this: 202 – 54? Hundreds Tens Ones 2 0 2 5 4 - It gets too confusing to have 2 smaller numbers in a row at the top: both the digits in the Ones place and Tens place are not large enough to minus the corresponding digits in the row below!
