Part 3: Reading Comprehension Farm Boy 1. Students are selected to read through the passage from Farm Boy. 2. Complicated words or phrases are discussed by asking students if they know the word’s meanings. E.g., “What do you think ‘ploughing’ is?” Students are asked to write down notes and jot down unfamiliar word meanings. They are also encouraged to use a dictionary for any other words they are not sure about. Words (or phrases) that might need further explaining: Fordson tractor A tractor brand name. Cornsacks Bags filled with corn. Plough A farm tool for loosening or turning the soil before planting seeds. Ploughing Turn up the earth (dirt) with a plough. Tilling Preparing the soil for crops (plants) using tools. Generations The average period, generally considered to be about thirty years, in which children grow up, become adults, and have children of their own. Family roots The family’s past/history. College University Townie A person who lives in a town. Plough Corn sacks tilling the soil. 3. Students are to complete the five (5) questions after class. Question 5 should be answered in a full sentence. For example, The boy’s father wasn’t interested in farming because ... A little bad or reckless but ultimately harmless. Damp Slightly wet. Soiled Dirty or stained. Mislaid Temporarily lost or misplaced. 3. Students are to complete the six (6) multiple-choice questions after class.
Textbook Each week, students are assigned some pages from their textbook to complete. Please note: It is very important that students DO NOT go ahead of the class and complete additional pages. These pages are to be completed during class (with any unfinished work to be completed for homework). Students have the opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance from the teacher.
