Common Diseases in the 1800 ’ s The Shitty Ones: Dysentery Dysentery, also known as “camp fever” or “the bloody flux” has been endemic throughout our time period. It’s noted to spread rapidly in unsanitary conditions where food and water could be contaminated by human waste or feces. It’s commonly found in crowded ships, soldier camps, and places that commonly lack good basic hygiene. If not treated Dysentery can weaken the survivors and lead them susceptible to other diseases. The time it takes to either recover from or die from Dysentery can vary vastly from patient to patient, and can either be short and simple, or suffering long periods of time before either recovering or dying. Who is Susceptible to Dysentery? People of any age are susceptible to Dysentery. People who live in soldier camps, immigrant ships, and people living in crowded and unsanitary areas are often more at risk to be infected with Dysentery. Symptoms Include: - Bloody or Mucousy Diarrhea - Stomach Cramps and Pain - Nausea - Vomiting - Fever

Cholera and that Epidemiologic information could be used to direct prompt and appropriate public health action as recourse and prevention. Who is Susceptible to Cholera? People of any age are susceptible to Cholera, as it is transmitted through bad water or food. Symptoms Include: - Thirst -Sunken features - Blueness in Extremities (From dehydration and thickening of blood in the veins) - Rice watered Stools (watery diarrhea with small chunks in it) - Vomiting and Diarrhea -Leg Cramps Treatment Confine the patient to bedrest, give the patient teas made of spearmint, chamomile, or warm camphor julep. Once the patient begins to sweat, calomel, camphor, magnesia, and pure castor oil is administered to the patient as well. Make sure the patient is drinking plenty of clean water and that they are getting clean, uncontaminated food as well. Broths are a good remedy, as they provide nourishment and hydration as well. In severe cases steam inhalation can help with dehydration as well.
