A. a blouse B. a coat C. boots D. a necklace M: That’s a really nice necklace Sue. Did Brian buy it for you for your thirtieth birthday? F: No, he hasn’t bought me anything yet because he’s going to take me shopping to buy me a new coat. I saw one I like in the local clothes shop. M: Well, that will be nice for your holiday this winter. F: Yes, and I need one to go with the new boots that my mother bought me as a birthday gift. They are leather and very comfortable. I wonder what the kids will get me this year. 2. What did the man forget to buy? A. bread B. butter C. strawberry D. bananas F: Oh no, you forgot to get the apples! I need them for the fruit salad I was going to prepare for the barbecue party. M: They didn’t have any, so I got home bananas instead. I thought about buying strawberries, but they were a bit expensive. F: Well, at least you remembered the white bread and the meat. Otherwise, you and your sister would go hungry. Let’s have some bread, butter and jam for now. Sam, where’s the butter? M: Oops, the butter slipped my mind completely mum.
2 3. What is the date of the party? A. 25th B. 26th C. 27th D. 24th M: Hi Jill, are you going to Bob’s birthday party on the 27th of March? It’s going to be a big event. He has invited all our friends from school. F: Oh. I thought the party was on the 26th. I must have put it down wrong in my diary. M: It’s on Friday, at seven in the evening, at the Palace Hotel. So which day is that? F: Well, I know Sunday is the 27th March, as it’s my cousin’s birthday. So I guess we were both wrong after all. 4. What is the weather like now? A. clear B. rainy C. cloudy D. thundery F: Wow! That was some storm. I thought that rain would never stop. The whole garden was completely flooded. It’s destroyed all my mum’s flowers. M: And the lightning was terrifying, wasn’t it? F: Yes, and the thunder was very loud. It scared my dog and he hid under my bed until it stopped. At least it’s cleared up in time for the barbecue. Let’s put the umbrellas up, we don’t want anyone to get too much sun on their faces. I think it is also time to start the fire for the barbecue. Can you get the wood for me, please? Part 2. For question 5-9, you are going to hear a conversation between a woman, Ellen, and her neighbour, Steve, about living in a small town called Little port. Decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). (5 pts) 5. Ellen was glad to leave New York. T 6. Ellen will buy a ticket for the musical. F 7. Steve thinks only men enjoy playing football. T 8. Ellen will join the gym next month. F 9. At the end Ellen is looking forward to living in Little port. F TRANSCRIPT ELLEN: Hi, I'm Ellen Jones. I'm your new neighbor. STEVE: Hello, Steve Brown. Nice to meet you. Welcome to Littleport. Where did you live before? ELLEN: I used to work in New York. I came back to this country last month. STEVE: Oh, really? My firm sometimes sends me to the states on business trips. But I'm always pleased to get home again. New York's so busy and noisy.
3 ELLEN: Oh, that's true, but I loved it. There's always lots going on, so it's very exciting. Anyway, tell me about what there is to do here in Littleport. STEVE: Well, I'm in the Drama Society. We perform plays or musicals twice a year. We're always looking for new members. ELLEN: I'm no good at acting or singing. STEVE: That doesn't matter. You could help behind the stage with the lights or something like that. ELLEN: Well, I'm not sure. When's your next show? STEVE: Actually, it's next weekend. We're doing a musical. ELLEN: Are you in it? STEVE: Yes, I certainly am. Would you like to buy a ticket? ELLEN: Well, thanks for asking, but I've already got something planned. Are there any other clubs like sports clubs, for example? STEVE: There's the tennis club. Then there's the football club. But you wouldn't be interested in that. ELLEN: Why not? Maybe they have a women's team. Women like playing football too, you know. Anyway, if there are health club or a gym in the town, I used to go regularly in New York. STEVE: Yes, and it's got a nice exercise room and swimming pool. ELLEN: Oh, I must join. Do you know if it's expensive? STEVE: About £24 a month. But there's one problem. There's a waiting list of about a year. All you have to do is get a form and fill it in. ELLEN: Oh, great. I don't think Little Port is going to suit me. Part 3. TRANSCRIPT A couple of years ago, I was working in an ancient Aztec city in South America. This city is becoming more and more popular with visitors, and I was part of a team employed to map out the city and its environs. We were halfway through our contract when we were approached and asked if we could come up with some
4 ideas about how best to conserve the site because it was feared that the increasing numbers of visitors could be damaging it. The worst damage is caused by the mere presence of people. Their breathing makes the air very humid, which causes the plaster on the walls to crumble. At the time I'm talking about, this was one of my special interests, so I was only too pleased to undertake the job. Anyway, one day I had to go into one of the minor tombs. We were making a survey of it because the authorities were going to build the coach park nearby, and we had to ensure the tomb wouldn't be damaged any further by the construction work. To my horror, the tomb was in a worse state than we thought it would be. There were signs of recent erosion, apparently caused when an underground stream flooded. But it was when I was climbing into the tomb itself that disaster struck. The stones underfoot were loose, you see, and I twisted my ankle. I fell awkwardly and rolled down a slope. I heard a terrible cracking noise, rather like a pistol shot, and I knew I had fractured my leg. The pain was excruciating. But once I got over the initial shock, I became far more worried about the fact that it was now dark outside, which would lessen my chance of being discovered. As the hours went by, I began to feel very cold and pretty scared, but in the end, I was incredibly lucky. A tour guide was out for an evening stroll and just happened to come close enough to hear me shouting from the hole in the ground. So he alerted the rest of the team. The break wasn't too bad, fortunately, but the whole thing was quite a frightening experience. SECTION TWO: PHONETICS Part 1.
