Game Design Skills Style Guide Textual Guidelines 1. How to write for Game Design Skills A. Define the core entity and its attributes. ● The #1 guiding principle is information density. Fewer words, more meaning. ● Determine the core entity—the clearly defined central concept, object, or person in a sentence. ○ In, “Cloud Strife is the main playable character in Final Fantasy VII and the FF7 Remake series.”—the core entity is Cloud Strife, because he’s the central topic. ● Elaborate on the entity’s attributes—its key properties or characteristics; the specifics. ○ If the entity is a PC monitor, its attributes are things like the size, resolution, or refresh rate. ● Answer the header’s question/define its core entity and attributes in the first two sentences: ○ Above, it’s easy to stick to the semantic principle by answering directly without using adverbs (usually, often, typically) or giving vague statements like “it depends”. ○ Defining the core entity/attributes can be tougher when the header isn’t a direct question: Incorrect example ❌ Correct example ✅
❌ Doesn’t follow the sentence structure of the header ❌ Doesn’t use the core verb from the header ❌ Gives vague definition of attributes, “discover” “skills” ❌ Uses personal experience in the first paragraph (even in the first two sentences) ✅ Follows the sentence structure as the header ✅ Uses the same core verb as the header ✅ Doesn’t lean on personal experience ✅ Gives a succinct definition of the core entity/attributes in the first two sentences B. All your writing should be clear, to the point, and full of specific details. ● Speak like an expert on the topic who’s in a hurry. ● Start each sentence/paragraph/H2 section with the most important information. ○ Avoid inverted sentences: ❌ Given the available options, orange juice is my first choice. ✅ Orange juice is my first choice, given the available options. ● Provide as much relevant detail as possible (so readers don’t fill in the blanks themselves). ○ ❌ Drinking water has lots of minerals, which can be beneficial. ○ ✅ Drinking water contains nutritionally beneficial minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. ● When in doubt, follow the “X Y Z” format to hit a healthy amount of information density (the order is flexible, as long as there are 3 clearly related pieces of information). Examples: ○ X [main object] Y [does something] Z [to something/in reaction to something]. ○ X [something happens] Y [to main object] Z [as a result of another action/which leads to...] ● Save jokes, personal anecdotes, casual discussions, and so on for the latter half of the section/paragraph—after the key facts have already been established. ● Example:
