Choose students to read the story aloud. Ask students to find the first event, the rest they can fill out in their own time. Focus 3: This Week’s Topic Sea Otters: What do you know about sea otters? (Ask students to share their knowledge). Let’s learn about sea otters together.
Sea otter facts: Where Do Sea Otters Live? They inhabit shallow coastal waters of the eastern and northern pacific. They are found along the coasts of Alaska, California and Russia. Sea otters are distributed across North America and Russia. In these waters they tend to live in a Kelp Forest. This is because their food sources are typically found there. What is a kelp forest? Kelp are large brown algae that live in cool, relatively shallow waters close to the shore. They grow in dense groupings much like a forest on land. These underwater towers of kelp provide food and shelter for thousands of fish, invertebrates, and marine mammal species. What Do Sea Otters Eat? Sea otters feed almost exclusively on marine invertebrates. These include mussels, clams, sea urchins, snails, mollusks, crustaceans and bivalves. Apart from these, they also tend to eat larger prey like giant octopuses and crabs. They eat almost one-fourth of their own weight. Predators for Sea Otters? The sea otters are not very pleasant to the taste and so, they are not quite often eaten by predators. However, the young sea otters may be killed by predators like killer whales, sea lions, great white sharks and bald eagles. When they come ashore, they are more vulnerable to predators like coyotes and brown bears. Here is a short video from YouTube on Sea Otters: Have students take notes in their books on any interesting facts they hear about sea otters and discuss.
