Chapter 1 Opening/Closing I didn’t go to prom. Instead I went to Po’Folks. Both times. In my high school you had two chances to go to prom. You could go your junior year and you could go your senior year. The pressure was on mainly to go your senior year, but attending junior year was pretty important too. It was just accepted that just about everyone went to prom. The smart kids and the dumb kids. The popular kids and the unpopular kids. The rich ones, the poor ones. Somehow just about everyone went to prom. Not me though. I defined myself as being very “anti” the norm. I wore purple nail polish. I ate lunch in the courtyard instead of the cafeteria. I wore shorts with long sleeve hoodies. In Florida. So I skipped out on prom both years. It was Po’Folks instead of the prom for me. To understand why that’s funny you first have to know what Po’Folks is. Po’Folks is a cheap, fairly grimy, unapologetically southern chain restaurant.
